The Upright Animals @ Play:STL — 2007.09.23

The Upright Animals turned in a rocking set on the last day of the Play:STL festival. As always, lead singer Jamie Irwin executed a strong performance on the mic, while the Peters brothers brought all the Guitar Hero action. Bill Newmann on bass brought the funk groove as Moises Padilla on drums set the foundation of the five-piece. The late-afternoon performance on the East-facing stage came with all the heat and backlighting one would expect, but as always the Animals were fun to shoot. Just a few snaps from their set.

Wow, the light looks really warm and wonderful.

Thanks, Chris. The light could have been worse, but it wasn’t as nice as it might appear in these shots.

The Animals played around 4:00 pm and played for about half an hour, so the sun was getting fairly low during their set. However, since the band was playing with their backs to the sun, their faces were mostly in shade, and that’s where I set the white balance.

Also, I mostly metered for the faces and let everything else expose from there. Exposing for the highlights would have shown the light to be much more contasty. Finally, a slight curves adjustment also helped smooth out the range.

Yeah, in this case, I really like the warm sunny backlit look. =)
