Hey b.p.,

You were actually pretty easy to photograph, but I felt bad for having no shots of Dottie, since she was stuck behind a small wall of keyboards, let alone Davey who was exiled to the back of the stage. Next time.

My experience of the show was probably quite different than that of people on the floor, so my criticism of the lighting is purely as a photographer.

As you can see from the one audience shot, the crowd absolutely loved the show.

Thanks very much for taking the time to comment, I appreciate it.

Best,
Todd

nice work! this is probably heresy, but
i agree that the stage separates the band
from the audience a little too much.
at least from my point of view. i have too
many pedals to press and singing requirements to
leave my platform for very long. stuck on my island.
when we have had david barnes in tow, the stage
is properly used a bit more. i think the platform
lighting could be done a bit more subtly. start
minimally and work our way up.

we are learning! thanx for the criticism.

Hey George,

Thanks for the comment. If I can get away with it, I will often use just the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 for shows like this one at the Pageant. The stage is about five feet tall, which is enough to make good use of the wide angle, but modest enough so that 55mm can still render pretty tight shots of band members at the front of the stage.

For theatre-style venues like this, I find the 85mm most useful for picking up headshots of the singer or for picking up the drummer at the back of the stage. Mostly, I think it comes down to style, as I know some shooters who use wide angle all the time.

One thing I appreciate about the 85mm is that on a 1.5x crop sensor, it's a nice size for a telephoto when I don't want to bring the 70-200mm.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Best,
Todd

Great shots man. I am an aspiring concert photographer myself, and just purchased the Sigma 30mm 1.4 to pair with my Canon 40d. I have a 50mm prime already, and was wondering how necessary the 85 is to you? I plan on getting an 85L eventually, but was just looking for some input. I usually shoot shows like this one. Thanks a lot, and looking forward to more pics :)
