You mentioned the low end sound pressure. Sure, at 135dB that'll hurt you over time, but this is EXTREMELY rare. Mid and high frequencies will damage ears at much lower pressures, and that is something to actually be concerned about. Low frequency is very expensive to reproduce at high sound pressures, while mid and high frequency is much much less expensive to repro at damaging pressure levels, and is often at dangerous levels in modern venues. YES, keep the earplugs handy, but don't be too concerned about the low end. How many times have I mixed shows for hellishly loud bands (read "amateur") and worn hearing protection myself? The answer is MANY, but it is never the low end that I am concerned about.
If I damage my ears, I'm out of work, so I am careful.
As a photographer, I would be more worried about the bass shaking the camera. :)

Interesting conversation. I'd found the foam didn't dull the sound enough for me (at weddings), and have been wearing the ER-20's, though in 2 weeks go in for a custom mold fitting (only $165, for 40+ weddings a year, basically cheap.) Has anyone else gone this route?
