Concert Photographers: Post your website

ishootshows.com

Consider this an opportunity for free advertising.

Music photographers: I want to see your website. I want you to post a link to your work. Portfolios, blogs, Myspaces, Flickrs – whatever you’ve got.

Just a link will do.

The goal? To create a growing and diverse list of concert photographers.

Personally, I love seeing new work, and this index is not only a means for me to find fresh music photographers, but it’s a way for others to check out your work, too.

Don’t be shy; even if you post here regularly and I’ve seen your site before, it might be new to others. So link it up.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Please just leave a comment with a link to your work below.
  2. And after you’ve posted your link, I’d like to invite you to browse through the sites your fellow concert photographers have posted!
  3. Tell your friends, blog about this, share it via social bookmarking. The more people who post up their website, the better this will work!

I’ve been into doing documentary-type photo diaries of bands on tour lately as well (a feature from the first tour I went on was just published in Anthem). People are often surprised to find out that most what I shoot is self-assigned – I guess that’s how I keep it real.. I got into photography three years ago and it’s changed my life. GREAT info on this site henry – glad to have found it!

  97. Hi everyone –

Kinda new at this and I have a pit etiquette question I’d like to throw out to the masses. I usually go into the pit with two bodies with zooms on them. I keep an additional zoom and maybe two primes as well as batts and cards in a small shoulder-slung messenger bag. The bag is 12 inches wide, 10 high, 5 deep. Not huge. I keep the bag on me both for safety and for fast lens changes.

I’ve shot maybe 30 shows in crowded pits with the bag on with nary a problem.

Last week I got “yelled” at in a very nasty way by another photog because my bag was “getting in her way.” She demanded I stow it under the barricade. As there was 3 grand worth of glass in the bag and the show was kinda of nuts, I politely refused. (I also don’t respond well to people being nasty.)

I’m a skinny guy and try to stay out of people’s way when they’re moving. Anyone care to comment on what the proper etiquette is in a situation like this? Is it cool to keep a bag on me, or should I stow it? Last thing I want to do is annoy other shooters.

    Thanks

    Matthew Howe

  98. Chris says:

    Hey Matt–

Sounds like a skank to me [in the nicest sense of the word... ok, maybe not].

I would say you are cool, just try to be as nimble as possible. When Todd shoots, I know he has a d700 plus d3 with 24-70 and 70-200 attached, a utility belt and harness, and the belt has another small bag attached. I can’t remember if he carries is crumpler with him or not or keeps it on the ground – but regardless, he has a lot with him, and he still manages to move around people, as my friend puts, “like a freaking spider monkey.” If you have the two bodies and keep them close to you and use a small bag for lenses, I wouldn’t see a problem as long as you respect the other photographers’ space and move around them when they need to, just as they should do for you. I personally keep my bag under the barricade most the time if I know I’m going to use my 17-55, and keep it with me on my shoulder if I’m going to be doing a lot of switching. Regardless, I try to move out of people’s way when they come to me, and hope they’d do the same.

If she’s going to be a jerk, punch her in the boob and keep shootin, man.

    That’s my 2 cents.

  99. Todd says:

Hey Matthew, I think that you were perfectly within your right to refuse to stow your bag. From your description, it doesn’t sound like it’s a very obtrusive size.

That said, I always try to be very mindful of my bags so they’re out of the way of other photographers in the pit. If you’re using a messenger-style bag slung around back, it can it more difficult for other photogs to pass behind you.

Most of the time I use a belt system that keeps my lens cases very close to my body and makes it basically impossible for them to swing or knock another photog. The bags, which have a slim profile to begin with, are positioned on my sides and in front of me, so it’s easy to manage them.

In the rare instances that I use my Crumpler messenger-style bag, I will often try to sling it in front of me or just stow it under the barricade.

    Hope this helps.

I’d love to use my SB-800′s and my 24-70 at a concert…but mostely i have 6-7 minutes and are quite away from the stage – so there is only one lens i can use – the 70-200. Even my press id, friendship with most of the bodyguards – it’s still the same – photographers are treated like a big disturbing problem :(

    Hi all showzshooters,
here is one more entry. I had really good time browsing your links.
I have to say a big thanks to Todd and his website as it really helped me to take better photos and find my way to get something online. Still have everything to learn but that’s my pleasure.

  109. http://www.flickr.com/photos/m-d-p/

Just a Flickr page and not at all large or even quite small in the rock department but more soon as a few acts have been very happy and passed my name along.

Thanks Todd for your great site.
Definitely one of the most informative and creative of 2008.

Also I’d just like to mention how photographers seem to have it a lot easier to get to shoot major acts where as here in Australia it’s tied up with media companies and highly regulated. I’m trying to build up a nice portfolio for these so called companies and blow them away. Haha.

Again awesome site Todd and I look forward to your shots in 2009.

    Matthew.

Back in the early ’80s I shot loads of punk shows…then sat on the negatives for over 20 years. I recently got some of those shots published in a book, Radio Silence (MTV Press), and have started shooting bands again, primarily as a way to practice for my next career: movie stills photography. Some of my older work and a few new shots are at http://www.loudfastphoto.com.

Great work and love your website, Todd!

  145. Mary Kate says:

Being that I am a sixteen year old girl with a ridiculous mother, I do what I can to obtain the money and grades in school to push my way to the front row at every show I’ve ever been to, holding onto my Nikon D60 for dear life.
So, I’m not the best out there.
However, I do what I can. Also, I have more than just show photography, but that seems to be all that people care about.
    Anyway, that’s my schpeel(word?).
Occasionally, I’ll post my work on my Tumblr: http://mklikesthrust.tumblr.com
but it’s, obviously, not what I would show my future employer.
    /end useless description.

  146. LaciH5 says:

Very nice points. You touched on a few of great points. Thanks for putting that together. Adding this blog in my RSS feed!

  147. Roz says:

I haven’t been doing as much concert photography as I would like to anymore. One, because venues won’t let me in with my slr and since I’m not working for anyone I can’t get a press pass and secondly because I just haven’t been going to as many shows as I used to.
But I still love concert photography, it is probably the most satisfying of any of the photography I’ve done because I never know what I’m going to get. The artist doesn’t know me and isn’t posing for me, the shots just happen.

    • Roz says:

Also, a lot of the concert photography in my portfolio was taken with an old Advanced Digital fuji camera. 3.1mp, 800iso, so please forgive the less than stellar quality of some of the pictures.

  148. Sasa says:

Great idea Todd, to make this post..

Great work also, by you & your brother, but I’ve already said that to you :)
