I’m headed to Lollapalooza

lollapalooza

The one-day events of Warped Tour and the Rockstar Mayhem Fest were just stretching exercises.

I’m headed to Lollapalooza in Chicago for the weekend for three days of the photography. Are you also shooting this event or attending as a fan? If so, give me a shout.

The headlining act for this year’s festival is Radiohead, who I’m excited to photograph again. Other performances high on my list are Golgol Bordello, The Raconteurs, Rage Against The Machine, Gnarls Barkley and Kanye West (sorry NIN, I’ll photograph you August 20).

You can check out the full schedule of performances I’ll be photographing here:

I’ll also try to post up a few snaps at the end of each day. You know, if I’m not passed out from exhaustion and heat stroke. Wish me luck.

Good luck Todd, I’ll standby waiting for the pictures…
(It’s cool to add some pressure :D )

Best Regards and best of luck! :)

  2. Brian says:

I’ll be there on Sunday. I work merch for G Love & the Special Sauce. But since the festival handles merch for me I’ll have the whole day free. Hopefully I’ll run into you there. I’m going to do my best to land a photo pass for myself for the day.

Give me a shout if you need anything!

  3. Caroline says:

Ah, a fellow St. Louisan at Lolla! Disappointed to see you’re not checking out Tally Hall, but you’ve got a great set of bands you’re photographing! Good luck at the fest, and maybe see you around!

Hope you have a fab time!

I shot Lollapalooza last year, and it was an exhausting but exhilarating experience. My one piece of advice – factor in hoofing it between stages when planning your schedule. It’s a full mile in-between the AT&T and the Bud stage, and almost half a mile between anything south and anything north. Couple that with throngs of crowds, three song limits, and queues of photographers (last year they limited it to first 50 photogs)for big name evening acts, you’ve got a lot of tough trade-offs.

It’s a wondrously big thing to try and capture. I can’t wait to see your take on it, and read about your shooting experience. I’m always amazed and inspired by your work.

Quite the list of acts – your legs and feet will no doubt be hatin’ it every night. I’ll look forward to your Rage shots (and all the others, naturally).

  6. Mike C says:

Can wait for your take on Gogol Bordello. They put on one crazy show. Absolute blast to photograph and watch.

  7. Tasha says:

Butch Walker is on that list! Score!

Good luck, it’s going to be a crazy weekend!

  8. Sean says:

    Hey Todd,
Wow you are TRULY lucky to get the chance to photograph Radiohead (again!) from the photog pit!!! I totally envy you haha.
I see Radiohead in Toronto on aug 15 and I’m in the pit!!! (not the photog pit) haha.

Take it easy man. And good luck.

This year has been pretty great so far. Can’t wait to see your shots!

  10. Chris says:

Definitely looking forward to it. Can’t wait.

  11. Todd says:

Hey all, I’m back. Thanks for all the comments! I’m beat, but I’ll be following up with a slew of posts and a festival wrap-up shortly.

I was fortunate enough to be on the approved lists for both Radiohead and NIN. I was also one of only 25 photographers who were allowed to photograph Rage Against The Machine.

Overall, Lollapalooza 2008 was a great experience. Stay tuned for coverage soon.

    Hey Todd,

Love the site, love the pics. Been viewing for quite some time now. I have been shooting my friends band (www.redpillrock.com) for a couple of years now. I have a couple of questions…
I too try to have nice f/1.4 primes and shoot at 1600 on a D300 but since I don’t shoot big stadium/festival shows with great lighting, the lighting blows. I shoot a speed of about a 1/30th.
How do you deal with very low light situations like this or club shows?

In respect to workflow, how do you shoot compared to what you publish. Do you try to get as close as possible in camera or do you do a lot of post?

Thanks again for such a great site. I look forward to not just your great pics but behind the scene stuff like gear, workflow and tips and insight to what it’s like to get to where you are.

    Cheers,

    Gonzalo

  13. Sean says:

    Hey Todd,

I was just wondering if your recent project @ Lollapalooza was for a magazine, or if it was just freelance for ishootshows?

I cant wait to see your shots and behind the scenes!!! :D

  14. Samtheman says:

    Hi Todd,

Wow, I’m away from your blog for a few days and I feel like I’ve missed a whole month. Man, I didn’t know you were in town. If you’re ever my way again let me know and lunch is one me.

  15. julia says:

hey todd, i was there as a fan and ended up going to a lot of the shows you went to!

looking forward to seeing the pics that will make mine look ridiculously amateurish (it is a P&S afterall).
