In a frenetic, high-energy performance, Australian rock trio Sick Puppies delivered a thrashing set that had the barricade heaving as the crowd sang along and pumped their fists into the air.
Lead by Shimon Moore on guitar and vox, the band launched into every song with a driven intensity that displayed a tight synergy between the groups’ three players.
While Moore rocked the axe and mic, Emma Anzai slapped slithering bass lines as she stomped around the stage, locking down to Mark Goodwin’s tight work on drums.

Photographer’s Notes:
Flash. Two of them.

i’m trying to tell which one did you used flash, was it the drummer one? and i like the 5th and last one
Hey Jessie, thanks for the comment and your picks. I actually used flash on all the images in the main set except those of the drummer.
omg haha i suck now i get it – cause you said flash , two of them i thought it was two of the photos not two flashes.. haha
I guess that’s what I get for cryptic shooting notes.
Nice shots as usual Todd. Love those insane ones of the guitarist!
Best Regards!
Hey Celso, thanks for the comment. The guitarist was a great subject, though most of the show he was behind the mic singing.
It was nice when he cut loose and really rocked out at the front of the stage.
You better send these to Paul! And a free hug to you, my friend.
Hey Gabi, thank you for everything. I’ll shoot Paul a link for sure.
Theses are one HECK of a set dude. Stellar work. I LOVE what you did with CLS!
Hey Keith, thanks for your comment, I’m glad Nikon’s wireless flash system worked out for this gig – especially since I didn’t have a stand/foot for the remote flash!
Hey Todd, didn’t know that they were well known in the states!
Great set mate. Care to share the setup for the flash? (Positioning etc?)
Hey Joel, I’m not sure how well known the Pups are in the States, but they do get radio play, and, more importantly, their fans at the show were absolutely loving every minute of it.
It wasn’t a big, sold out show by any means, but the crowd was mighty in their own way.
As for the flash setup, it’s generally two flashes, one on-camera as commander and one off as the remote.
You’ve made a great use of flash again Todd! Great set full of energy! What else can i say? Bravo!
Hey Laurent, thanks very much. Glad to hear the flash is working for you in this set. The stage light for this gig was very low, with lots of deep color washes from the back.
man oh man – Todd I can’t even pick out a favorite in this set – they’re all spectacular! Great work!
Hey Keath, thanks for the comment. I didn’t really expect to get such a strong reaction from this set!
I already left a comment on flickr but I REALLY enjoy watching theses photos. Sick Puppies are on my top list of fave bands and I was very looking forward your vision of the show. I shot them this summer and it’s great to see the differences between my shots and yours. You did an A-mazing job Todd!
Hey Claudia, thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the set. I hadn’t listened to the band too much before the shoot, but I was blown away by the energy of their live performance. They really just rocked out and whipped the crowd into a frenzy. Really just a fun gig.
Great work as always, I shot these guys 3 nights before in Idaho during the sunset. nice use of flash, sometimes it sure makes all the difference when you can get away with it.
great dynamic shots as always :-)
Hey Joe, thanks for the comment. These guys put on a great show, don’t they? I would have loved a little extra light for this gig, as the stage lighting was so dim. Sometimes you just have to break out the flashes.
Hey Todd, great shots as always, would you mind posting a rough sketch of where you place you flashes? I’ve been shooting a lot of shows and try to not use flash as much as possible and when I do it’s just one SB-800, on camera. Do you have problems getting access to place off camera flashes?
Hey Mike,
The setup for every shot changed, but in most of these you’ll see that the key is camera-left, while the commander and fill flash is on-camera. Hope this helps.
so Todd, was the off-camera flash held in yr left hand, or was it mounted/positioned somewhere?
nice work!
Hey Tim, thanks for the question. I positioned the remote flash on the stage, nothing fancy. No stands or anything like that.
Sick puppies
Sorry to be so far behind on your posts — school is gettin ready to catch up and I haven’t been here as much as I should have! I really dig 1, 7 and 8. Great job on getting the drummer, and 8 is ridiculous. Love that angle, and Emma is even in it slamming her head. Nice work!

Hey Chris, thanks for your picks on this one. Sick Puppies are really a fun band to photograph, I’m bummed I missed their live show at Pointfest.
You have amazing photos! This is an interview with the band and a link through that post to some more photos…nothing like yours though.
