Photographer’s Notes:

As with many performers who are seated at a piano, Sara Bareilles was an interesting challenge in several regards. To begin with, the singer’s close position adjacent to a large stationary object was a major consideration for this performance.

The lighting for this set was quite simple, with warm white light from the house setup shining constantly for most of the first two songs. Magenta accent lighting added a little pop from the back of the stage, mostly during the second song.

I used the Nikon D3 and Nikon D700 for this performance, utilizing the 70-200mm f/2.8 and 24-70mm f/2.8 for this set, using the telephoto for the majority of the set.

Cool set and lighting accents. I really like 2, 3 and 5 with 3 being my favorite. Nice emotion, tight framing, and if I may say so – cool cotton candy coloured hair [how's that for an alliteration?!].

It’s pretty similar to Jack’s Mannequin in some regards, though probably less movement — but I would imagine 2 mics would be harder than 1. Regardless, the longer end of telephotos seemed to be used for piano artists I’ve noticed…. ?

    Hey Chris,

Compared to Jack’s Mannequin, this show was just different. Each had their own challenges. I would say that Andrew McMahon is much more of an animated performer, so the shoot is difficult, but it also presents more opportunity for variety.

Also, McMahon is much closer to the front of the stage, which adds to the dynamism.

I would say that the use of the 70-200mm was a necessity of the distance more than anything, just as was the case for Ben Folds. With Jack’s Mannequin, I utilized the 24-70mm more.

    Thanks for the comment.

Might be the best photos of her I’ve seen to date!

Hey Chris, thanks. That’s always the plan! :)

hey Todd! these are gorgeous! I had alot of fun shooting Underoath as you said I would, but it definitely was difficult. We only got about 2 songs for Saosin and The Devil Wears Prada, most likey because the crowdsurfers were in high numbers, but we got 3 for Underoath which I was happy about. The lighting at my venue was not the greatest but I tried my best with it, alot of red but every once in a while there was a burst of white or yellow or something to make it a little better. Overall I wasn’t in love with my performance but it was a great first shooting experience and I put a few shots that I like on my flickr, I put the link in the part where it asks for your website up there, which I hope you can see.. I cant wait to see the result from when you shoot them in a few days! good luck to you, not that you need it!

  6. Todd says:

    Hey Amy, thanks!

I’m glad to hear Underoath worked out for you. Strange that the shooting time for the openers was cut short, but sometimes that also happens if the set time isn’t very long.

Red lighting is always a huge hassle – the bane of concert photogs everywhere.

I’ll check out your Underoath shots – I’m set to photograph them this Sunday, so we’ll have to see how that goes. If all goes well, I’ll be doing a portrait of the band as well.

  7. Amy says:

that’s awesome, I really hope it all works out so you get to do that!

  8. Todd says:

Hey Amy, everything did work out with Underoath, so I did a quick portrait setup with the band before their performance. I’ll be posting those images later this week.

  9. Amy says:

so glad to hear it, can’t wait to see them!
