November 16, 2008 – Supporting Rise Against, post-hardcore rockers Thrice laid into smoldering performance amid a stage of deep color washes and kaleidoscopic backlighting.

Photographer’s Notes:
Aside from the deep washes, the lighting for this set was great. Epic backlighting with loads of smoke and gobo’ed spotlights kicked in with full force for the third song, which capped off the three-song limit nicely.
Relatively long songs made this shoot a little easier as well, and afforded more time to work with the spastic bursts of LED lighting that came from the sides of the stage.
The D3 and D700 rocked the f/2.8 trifecta for this one: 14-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm. Overall, I favored the wider lenses, which seemed to suit the lighting schemes best to my eye.

Hey Brian,
Thanks for the feedback – I didn’t realize you were such a big fan of this band, I hope I did them justice for you.
I didn’t have any expectations for these guys – when they opened for Brand New, we were not allowed to shoot and I missed their set – but I left impressed after their set this time.
In the 5th shot, Teppei is rocking a Gibson.
Ha, I’ll get back to you on that tour – nothing immediately nearby, but nothing a short road trip wouldn’t solve.
Thanks again.
I am such a huge fan of this band. Don’t listen to the haters, all of their releases are solid. They write incredibly powerful music whether it be shred content or lyrical. Dustin’s writing with Teppei’s musical prowess and production (he also, doesn’t play with a guitar pick) are an inspiration to me.
These shots are great. Their light show is always great and compliment their power well. It just sucks that they were 2 of 4 on this bill. They’ve got so much material to pick from, especially with 2007-08′s releases of the 4-disc Alchemy Index EPs. Their label should hire me as a hype man.
But seriously, great shots. Those last two shots, feturing Eddie with the sunburst lighting and the orange-lit Dustin are incredible. And the 5th one down of Teppei is another favorite. Is he playing a Gibson hollow body or a Gretsch there?
Dustin is doing a solo tour with the lead singers of Saves The Day, The Get Up Kids, and Bayside in January. Go shoot it for me, since it’s not coming anywhere near me :( – http://absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=690392
What an absolutely amazing set Todd. Sometimes I think that your sets look better than the show would in person.
Hi Nathan, thanks very much for the feedback and kind words. I always try to tell the story of the show in the full set of images, and hope I’ve succeeded with this set.
Ace set as always, man. A lot of really dynamic shots here, good stuff. Thrice receiving such a low spot on the billing, though. That’s a little crazy. At least they had some sick lighting.
Hey Chris, thanks for the comment. Yeah, I was a little surprised, because Thrice actually had what I thought was the most dynamic lighting of the night. It actually started off really strongly with The Gaslight Anthem, too.
The lighting for The Alkaline Trio was arguably the lest interesting, unfortunately.
Thanks again for the feedback!
i saw the first shot and cursed. that’s how awesome you are.
i like the wide angle lenses too. it makes the pics more epic. fits their new cd well.
ps. brian pimped this on his twitter and i was all ?? cause i had two links going to the same place and i got all confused for a second.
Check out @toddowyoung’s incredible Thrice shots – http://ishootshows.com/2008/11/20/thrice
hey Todd, great shots as always!
thought id see if you have seen any of the smashing pumpkins lighting for this tour? from the videos i’ve seen it looks extremely dark, should make for an interesting shoot at the fox
I agree, I think Thrice had the best lighting out of all the sets for the night – and you really captured it nicely, especially on the wide ends. It was probably my favorite of the night as well, since it went a bit slower, we had more lighting, and there were less people in the pit. They really brought the beats, too.
In addition to your intro shot, I enjoy 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 18. Those lights on Kensrue just didn’t let up… epic backlighting on him.
Lookin forward to shootin more in the future with you!
Nice photos. And Teppei actually does play with a pick Brian. Promise.
That first photo is stunning. Pure rock. Makes me feel the impact.
Thanks, Karl.
Sweet band and sweet pics! This is by far my favorite band! You did them justice and got some great shots! How do you get such clear shots in such low lighting situations? I’ve get the Rebel xti and whenever i shoot in lighting like that, my iso has to be at like 1600 and my pictures always turn out so grainy. Whats your trick? is it in the camera or the lense?
I meant to click the “notify my via e-mail”…
@sokane1 I'll see if it can work; otherwise, you can check my snaps of Thrice's 2008 tour here: http://bit.ly/b2QIlY
