Fleet Foxes

Fleet Foxes @ the Fox Theatre -- 2008.10.13

October 13, 2008 – Opening for Death Cab For Cutie, Fleet Foxes delivered an entrancing performance at the Fabulous Fox in what for many was the highlight of the evening.

In contrast to the heavily atmospheric stage treatment to follow, the lighting for Fleet Foxes was, as a whole, very low key, with a simple treatment from the high lights front of house.

Photographer’s Notes:

Without changes in the lighting or much movement from the band, this set was very straight forward compared to the more frantic pace of shooting for Death Cab. No real surprises here.

High, contrasty lights lit the band in simple fashion, with all of the treatment coming from the front, save a few orange lamps in the background for accent lighting.

The 24-70mm and 70-200mm shared duties for this set, with around 50mm and above seeing the most use. While I used both the D3 and D700, this is one set where one body would have fared just fine, as there was plenty of time to change lenses and switch positions.

    Hey Todd,

Great set you have here. I ran across your site a few days ago and I believe I’ve already read every single post. Thanks for all of the great information you provide your readers, your site has answered most all of my questions regarding concert photography. I look forward to seeing what you shoot in the future!

    Hey Jordan,

Thanks for the kind words and for slogging through all the posts! I’m glad to hear this site has answered your questions about concert photography. There’s also a lot of info in the comments of the FAQ and Gear Guide pages, though it sounds like you may have already checked those out.

    Thanks again!

  5. Jordan says:

Yes sir! I’ve already checked those out and it was all extremely helpful.

Do you ever make it down to Atlanta for any shows?

  6. Todd says:

Not yet, but I think it would be great to catch Drive-By Truckers show at the 40 Watt Club in Athens. I’ll have to make it down there one day.

  7. BrYan says:

Great set, really clear & sharp.

  8. Todd says:

Hey Bryan, thanks. This performance almost felt like shooting at high elevation, if you know what I mean. Cold, harsh lighting, quiet music, and only small movements onstage.

  9. Kai says:

The first ones really look like there where some studio lights… Great set, I’d love to see my band of the year live…

  10. Todd says:

Hey Kai, thanks for your comment. The lighting was very “lonely,” I felt – but perfectly fitting to the music. The band put on a mesmerizing show.

  11. Chris says:

Interesting way to play a guitar. Cool orange highlights.

    I like #5

  12. Todd says:

Hey Chris, thanks for the pick.

  13. Jordan says:

Do the orange spotlights come out that perfect by themselves? or is that something that needs to be touched up later? They look amazing in these shots, as with most all of your photos.

  14. Todd says:

I didn’t change any of the small orange lights. They appear pretty much how I recall them looking during the performance – their intensity was pretty low.

For better or for worse, I pay very close attention to the position of the lights in the frame while shooting.
