REO Speedwagon

REO Speedwagon @ the Chaifetz Arena -- 2009.01.18

January 18, 2009 – Performing an intimate, high-spirited acoustic set, Kevin Cronin and Dave Amato of REO Speedwagon pulled from the band’s nearly 40-year old catalogue in a show that lit up the Chaifetz Arena.

Photographer’s Notes:

As noted in the shooting notes for Huey Lewis & The News, who shared billing with REO Speedwagon, the shooting positions for this show were primarily limited to the edges of the stage and the center aisle of the floor. As such, the Nion 70-200mm f/2.8 played a large role in capturing this performance.

The range of the telephoto zoom did a tremendous job in closing the gap to the musicians, while the flexibility of focal lengths made composition all the more fluid. As it was an acoustic set by just Kevin Cronin and Dave Amato, rather than with the full band, this fact narrowed down the subject choices considerably.

Since I was shooting with all but the one lens, the Nikon D3 saw the most action, with very sparse help from the D700 and Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 at my side. Due to the shooting restrictions, the Nikon 14-24mm stayed in the bag.

Due to the relatively bright spotlights, I shot this set mostly at ISO 1600, f/2.8, and between 1/160 and 1/320.

  3. Love the bokeh on #5.

That’s 200mm for you. I made two shots with the same framing, one a blank background when the jumbotron wasn’t lit up, and another when it was.

While I liked the clean look of the first shot, I decided to go with the additional atmosphere of the one included in this set.

      Thanks for the comment, Chris.
