March 27, 2009 – Here’s a preview from The Ruse’s set at the Blender Theater in NYC. The Blender has some of the most gorgeous lights for lush atmospheric treatments out of the venues I’ve shot. However, even great house lights can use a little help from time to time.
Enter Nikon’s wonderful wireless flash system, which was employed to add a little pop to singer John Dauer against the lovely background of the Blender’s background effects.
Stay tuned for the full set of images and the shooting notes.

Grrr, I am jealous of the skin tones in your images, I swear to god every time I see a Nikon shot vs a Canon one I like the skin tones better. I am sure its just me though hehe.
Hey Rene,
What do you prefer about Nikon skin tones as compared to Canon?
What’s the venue going to be named now that Blender has gone the way of the dodo? Any talk on that?
Good question. I have no idea what’s going to happen to the venue now that Blender is no longer a print publication. As long as they don’t start ripping out cans from the ceiling, it’s all good whatever the name is. ;)
Todd,
Generally I am finding them more accurate looking and less blue.
Whenever I take general photos of people at events etc. They tend to be blue.
Even in controlled environments with a custom white balance they tend to be cooler.
The SOOC images from Nikon I have seen tend to be warmer. I tend to like images warmer.
Hey Rene,
It’s funny, because Nikon used to have the reputation for a much cooler color balance compared to Canon. Regardless, Nikon has definitely been tweaking their color profiles over the last generation or two of cameras, moving to a much warmer feel, something we readily see in skin tones.
It’s also worth noting that I shoot in auto WB 90% of the time.
