Meet Jonathan Cook, frontman for power-pop rockers Forever the Sickest Kids. I met up with the guys on the Bamboozle Road Show 2009 and we threw down for some quick portraits. Everyone in the band was great to work with and made the session a lot of fun. The above shot is a three-light setup with two Nikon SB-600s fired into 45″ umbrellas camera right/left, and a bare SB-600 behind Jonathan camera right.
Stay tuned for the full set, including group shots and individuals from the rest of Forever the Sickest Kids.

I enjoy the happy mood in the picture, but also the setting is kinda interesting i think. Great contrast too.
I have an slightly offtopic question for you tood. Havn’t tried it out yet but i have a theory about shooting in Manual mode and i just want to hear a comment from you about it. Let say you find your setting for a specific light-schematic and everything is fine. But then suddenly a strobe passes by your lens and the picture gets really overexposed.
How can i rescue this situation? I think “backlighting” and flares are really cool, but how can i really catch em when shooting in Manual?
Thanx Todd and great work again!
Hey Kristian, thanks for the feedback!
Is your question for portraits or for live music?
it’s regarding live music!
My little sister was the little girl with the pink flamingo that was in a few of the pictures you took at The Pageant last Saturday. I was just curious as to when these pictures were going to be put up.
thanks!
I love this shot! This is incredible considering you’re solely using SB-600s. How do you trigger them? I’m used to setups with an SB-800 on camera to fire off the other 600s. You do great work!
Hey Kevin, thanks for the comment, glad to hear you like the work. I’m triggering the SB-600s with an SB-900 fired on-camera.
when it’s in commander mode, is the sb-900 actually firing, or just sending out the infrared signal the sb-600s? i’ve always been curious about that. great shot as always. can’t wait to see the rest!
oh, i just looked at your shots of wilco last year. i get to shoot them in oxford on thursday, so i wanted some inspiration. basically amazing. your shots of nels are my favorite. that guy is my hero. seriously, interstellar space revisited kinda changed my life.
Hey Joey, thanks for the comment.
In commander mode, the SB-900 does fire visible light – and that flash can show up in images at certain combinations of aperture/ISO/distance (mostly above ISO 1600 at f/2.8 and a distance of a few feet).
Wilco was an unexpected surprise to shoot last year. Interesting color combinations, made for some fun in the pit. Good luck with the show!
