June 17, 2009 – As previously reported, Craig Finn of the Hold Steady is a fantastically dynamic subject, a representative fact made clear as the Brooklyn five-piece as they opened for Dave Matthews Band.

Photographer’s Notes:
This was a quick three songs, but a lot of fun. The Hold Steady put on a great show despite the 100º heat index, particularly frontman Craig Finn, who was a blast to cover.
The band was set up relatively far back from the front of the stage, so I shot this performance primarily with the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8. From that zoom range, I mostly shot above 105mm.
Overall, the lighting for this show was pretty straight forward. Lots of hot light from high in the ceiling rig and not too much in the way of atmospheric effects.

Fantastic set of a great live band, Todd. Finn is like a two-year-old full of sugar onstage, so keeping track of him can be a chore in and of itself – but a fun one.
What’s up with the second to the last photo? Did Dave Matthews sneak in for their set?
Hey Jason,
Thanks for the comment. Finn was a lot of fun, I hadn’t seen the Hold Steady live but am glad I caught their set. Dave Matthews came on stage to introduce the Hold Steady with a little banter and a gong hit.
THS shouldn’t play ampitheaters. They have been and will always be a bar band. But good work, as always, Todd.
Yeah, it was a little strange, considering the last time the Hold Steady played St. Louis it was at the Gargoyle – AKA, the converted university cafeteria annex. Thanks for the comment, Chris.

They’re great to shoot.. he’s so energetic! (Shot them when they supported Counting Crows here in London) – Sime
Yup, tons of energy from Finn, and as a whole the Hold Steady are great subjects, too.

Great set, and great to see these guys in action. “Stay Positive” was my favorite album last year.
