Your friendly neighborhood concert photographer, hard at work.
I was recently interviewed for a quick TV segment that aired with a pre-concert special for Sheryl Crow’s performance for the MLB All-Star game in St. Louis. The 30-minute TV special was hosted by Metromix.com and included interviews with Sheryl Crow and some other features relating to the All-Star game.
In total, my small part of the the TV piece was put together from three separate interviews – one in the studio, one on-location at Train concert (where I’m in the pit), and then another interview that was broadcast live before the Sheryl Crow concert (last part of the video).
In addition to the main segment, there was also a short teaser clip that aired before in the 30-minute special, so I’ve included that first in addition to the title graphic and intro for the All-Star concert special.
I think the station was most interested in the tie-in to the Dave Matthews Band album cover that was shot at the baseball stadium, so they focused on that during the interviews.

Nice one Todd :) Great stuff. Really chuffed that you’re getting the exposure you deserve.
Hey John, thanks very much for the support, I really appreciate it.
Sweet! I was hoping to see this. I missed the train show due to a wedding. I didn’t see you at all this summer at live on the levee. Im guessing the couple of shows you went to are the ones I didn’t shoot. : (
Hey Lea, thanks for watching the video. I didn’t shoot that much on the Levee – I did Train and Lupe, that’s really about it, aside from the Sheryl Crow concert. There’s always next year!
Nice one, congratz! Is it on purpose that the video goes black after 3:34 min. or is there something missing?
Cheers,
Tilman
Hey Tilman, thanks. That’s some dead air that somehow got into the video – I’m uploading a corrected video and one that’s also a bit smaller so it will be faster loading.
Awesome Todd. Video was a lot of fun to watch, and very inspiring. Look at you with the CD cover ;)
Hey Kevin, thanks for the comment, nice to hear from you here. Hopefully this is just the start.
hahaha…one helluva start Todd! With your shots, and work ethic, if this is a start, I feel sorry for your competition ;) Better watch those kneecaps son!
I’ve done about 5% of what I really want to do with this photography thing. No bravado here, but I really do feel like I’m just starting out.
I’ll let you know when I get to 10%!
Nice! And you and Chris don’t look very much alike AT ALL. ;)
Chris is the handsome one, but I’m prettier.
Thanks, Doug!
Congratulations Todd!
Thanks, Kristian!
Congratulations Todd! I’m glad you are getting recognition because your work is outstanding. I’m glad you posted this because I missed this the night it was on and I was pretty bummed.
Hey Megan, thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it. Glad I could get a copy to post – otherwise, I wouldn’t have seen the video either.
I shoot shows: As seen on TV! Just posted the quick TV clip/interview on me that aired a few weeks ago: http://is.gd/22hx5

Thanks for the support, Corey.

What a babe.
Congrats on this though. Has anyone recognized you from TV yet? Shouting at you in the pit? You’re on your way to becoming your own celebrity.
Hey Brian,
I had one girl say something along the lines of, “Didn’t I see you on TV?” It was a little surreal/awkward.
I have kids shouting at me all the time, but it’s not necessarily because they know me. Some do recognize me as the “I shoot shows” guy and others just want to know who I’m shooting for or if I can get them backstage. I’m always happy to talk to fans, though, it gets me excited for the concert.
congrats on the tv interview.
your mother must be proud!
Hey Lester,
Thanks for the kind words. My parents did enjoy it!
Todd is a celeb for us concert photographer beginners xD
glad you posted the video, otherwise I would’ve never seen it.
Hey Amy,
Aww, thanks for the kind words. I’m happy to share what I can and I’m thrilled if any of that inspires someone to start photographing music.
Can I have your autograph? ;-)
Way to go Todd – great feature and you did well in front of the camera too! It’s interesting seeing you in action and gives a good insight into how some of your amazing images come about. Are the stages normally that high above the pit? I’ve only ever shot stuff where the stage is at waist level and much more limited space in the pit.
Good luck with the next 5%, can’t wait to see what it will be!
Hey Stephen,
Great to hear from you. Sometime I’ll have to have someone on the barricade film me with a P&S, as I’ve had a lot of people ask about a clip like that to show what/how I shoot at a show.
The stages normally aren’t that high for indoor venues, but this was an outdoor concert with a higher than normal setup. 5-6 feet is a lot more standard for the shows that I cover.
Brilliant stuff, Todd. Great to see your continued success. Congratulations on the awesome album cover.
Hey Felix,
Nice to hear from you. Thanks for the support!
Somehow your TV interview happened to run as I ate dinner and flipped on the tube. A bit curious, I found your site and feel completely re-inspired, and now always excited to see what images you’ll post next.
Saw you at the Lupe show. Because of the weather, the whole thing was on a lark and I had no idea what to expect. Rather exciting…and the wrong corner behind the barricade for the show’s better moments. Oh, the importance of show research…
Hey Eric,
Thanks for the comment. Were you photographing with a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 in the crowd?
CONGRATS! That’s amazing. You deserve it.
Thanks, bongopix. It was certainly very nice of the producer to think of me for this program, I’m glad it all worked out.
Really cool! That was a good spot – thanks for posting it. Good to see you getting some time in front of a camera, too! Maybe you’ll soon need a vacation to get away from it all, slip into a bit of anonymity?
Hey Thomas! Thanks for the comment, glad you saw this.
I absolutely need a vacation, stat. I’m still a little sore from all the hustling I did on Monday at Warped Tour. A quiet little vacation sounds like just the thing. Know of anywhere good I should visit?
Photographer, blogger, t.v. star!
Hey Todd, good on ya! Also, how’s the BlackRapid working for you? Have you tried the double strap? Does it work as advertised?
Cheers
C – The Black Rapid strap is working out pretty well, I use two all the time shooting with the D3 and D700. It does work as advertised, though the price is a bit much, I think it’s a nice product. Thanks for the comment.
dude, that really rocks!
Hey Pat, thanks!
wow. thats so cool!
congratulations!
I only hope to be half as good of a concert photographer as you are someday :)
and it is so awesome to have the best seat in the house, even if its for only 3 songs !
Sometimes 3 songs seems like a long time and i have never had a problem with getting good shots in that time span, i only wish they would let us choose which three songs as most bands are not really into the full energy of a performance until the middle or near the end of a set. Congrats on that cover! I did’nt know you were in St. Louis i was wondering how you get to be near so many great shows and didn’t realize how many bands pass through.
