Just a quick preview from the Farm Aid 2009 concert last night, which featured performances by Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, Wilco, and others.
For me, Willie Nelson and Neil Young were easily the concert highlights. This year’s concert, while a full day of work, went very smoothly and was a lot of fun. It was especially great to meet lots of other music photographers at this event.
Quick rundown:
I used the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 on the D3 for over 95% of the shoot for this event. While I was initially worried that I’d need more reach, even on the full-frame D3, 200mm was great for this event. Would 300mm have been nice? I think so, but I was very impressed by how well the telephoto zoom handled this event.
The BlackRapid Double Strap got a lot of comments/interest from other photogs. I was the only one using a RapidStrap product. More on this setup later, but let’s just say that I’ve had plenty of time over the last week to break in the new strap and will be publishing a full review shortly.
Stay tuned for the full image sets and shooting notes!

Haha… Hey Taylor, it was great meeting up with you at Farm Aid. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye, I bolted for my car to try and beat the rush in the parking lot. I saw your stuff and it looks great. Nice shooting with you.
I haven’t tried the Black Rapid double strap, but have started using the RS-5. I love it, so will be eager to hear your impressions on the double strap.
Hey Craig,
A full review of the Double Strap will be up as soon as I can shoot some photos of the strap and put down some thoughts. But my initial impressions are positive.
Thought it was cool you singled out Willie and Neil. There are a lot of bands out there to shoot and — in my case, as a writer also — talk to. But there is something extra cool about covering a real live legend. Really great to see your style applied to a legend.
That said, can’t wait to see your Wilco pix.
Hey Rich, thanks for the comment, sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I agree, photographing people with careers as storied as Willie Nelson and so many others in this show was certainly a big factor.
Thanks for the reminder on Wilco, I need to jump on the rest of these sets.
