Under alternating hot-and-cold lighting, indie rockers Paper Route brought a massive performance to the Pageant that was a great prelude to Paramore’s headlining performance.

Photographer’s Notes:
I came into Paper Route’s set only having heard their name, but I came away after photographing their set impressed and entertained. These guys put on a great show that was a lot of fun to shoot.
In particular, singer J.T. Daly was a very dynamic subject. While the lighting was very dramatic and didn’t feature much in the way of frontlighting, Daly was a great subject as far as live music photography goes, often at the front of the stage and engaging the crowd while rocking the mic.
The lively stage show was complimented by a nice array of lighting – lots of blue, red, and even a bit of white backlighting rounded out the majority of the schemes.
I shot Paper Route’s set at ISO 1600 and f/2.8 with a range of shutter speeds between 1/125 to 1/320.

Todd,
Love your shots! I’m a long time Paper Route fan (and saw them last night in KC), but have only very recently started taking photography seriously… Loving your shots, and your advice… Can’t wait to add some concert photos to my portfolio!
Best,

Hey Brandon,
Thanks for the comment, I always love hearing from fans of the bands I photograph – glad to hear you enjoyed this set of Paper Route. I really did come away impressed from their set and will check out their discography. Good luck with shooting shows!

Wow! I dig that first shot! Lots of energy, and immersed in wonderful red orangeness. But still somehow keeping the main subject well defined and with a more natural looking color, thanks to the white light streaming in from camera left. Great capture! And it’s the energy that really makes the image!
Hey Thomas,
Thanks for the comment, great to hear from you here. Yeah, Paper Route’s lighting was a great compliment to their live set, which I thought had a ton of energy to it. There were deep reds and blues, but also enough separation with splashes of white light to keep things interesting for me.
J.T. in general is a pretty cool, charismatic guy. I saw them some months back at a tiny venue, and he personally came up to the fans waiting outside to initiate conversation, rather than the other way around, seeming to get to everyone for at least few minutes of interesting talk. You can tell he totally adores playing gigs and the fan interaction that comes along with it.
Throughout my show, the lighting was this horrid, dim magenta wash. Gotta say this suits them and complements their live energy much better. Great pictures!
Hey Liz,
Thanks very much for sharing the story of J.T. and the band, that’s great to hear that he’s so down to earth and open to fans. Thanks for the kind words.
Dude, I just stumbled upon your blog and gotta say I love it. I’m trying to get into more concert photography, and the info you have is awesome. Plus, I’m a huge fan of Paper Route, which makes me even more jealous of your gigs.
