All Time Low

Punk-poppers All Time Low rolled into the Pageant with a big, rollicking show that had the sold-out house thumping and underwear flying onto the stage.

Photographer’s Notes:
Lighting for this show was pretty tough as things go, with a ton of backlighting and very little in the way of frontlighting. In fact, the back of the stage was peppered with programmable spots and crowd blinders that created a pretty solid wall of light when it caught the haze.
Timing aside, there was generally plenty of light to work with, so exposure wasn’t too big of a challenge for this set.
For this show, I focused on Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat exclusively, a nearly automatic decision made by these two performers’ wild antics on stage.
The front of the stage was lined with monitors and several ego risers, adding to the five-foot stage at the Pageant, so height was a challenge for this gig. As a small bit of recompense, the risers featured LEDs for a bit of uplighting through the grated platforms.
The ground rules for this show were the first three songs; flash was allowed.
End Notes:
Think I was joking about the underwear on stage?

These undergarments were thrown on stage before All Time Low came out, and one of the roadies gathered them up and put them on Jack Barakat’s mic stand a few minutes before the lights went down.

Flash was allowed? How often does this happen these days? Did you find yourself using it a lot?
It’s funny that you decided to shoot just two members of the band exclusively. I shot a band last night and while I managed to get shots of all four members, after culling through my images, I noticed that most of the good ones were of just two band members.
Thanks for your insight and great pictures.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I was surprised to hear that flash was allowed. One of the security guys who I know who was working the show came up to me in the photo pit and asked if I’d heard the rules. When I he said that flash was OK, I was pleasantly surprised.
As it happened, flash was a very welcome option for the three supporting bands. I used flash some for this set, though there was also plenty of catchflash going on from the audience as well.
While the band’s bassist was at the front of the stage as well, the two guitarists were by far the the most “out there” interacting with the audience and basically just clowning around for the fans, which made the default subjects for this show. With the challenges being what they were, narrowing down on Jack and Alex was a pretty easy choice.
Todd,
I was at last nights show and it was amazing. Even though you focused on only Jack and Alex I still love the shots. This was my 3rd time seeing them and everytime it gets better. Are you going to be putting up the other bands anytime soon ?
Hey Janessa,
Thanks for the comment. I’ll be putting up single shots from A Rocket To The Moon and Hey Monday later this week (I think) and I have a small set from The Friday Night Boys. I also did a portrait shoot with TFNB and will be posting those photos, too.

Chris, the first shot you featured in this set made me think of a cyc wall with psychedelic lighting!
Incidentally, i stumbled upon this ;http://www.zoom-in.com/photography/viewfinders/viewfinders-music-photography-challenge
and I think you totally should have won the challenge!!
Hey Mike, thanks for the comment — I think you have me confused with my brother, though!
gah.. sorry for the last comment… i was posting comments on both your and chris sites and got them confused!!
It’s all good, no worries.
I can’t wait to see the other pictures when there posted and the photo shoot from TFNB. Did you happen to shoot We The Kings ? There one of my favorite bands and since you take such amazing pictures I wanted to see how the lighting effected there set. The lighting for All Time Low was alot less harsh it seems then for the set last Friday night for Cobra Starship.
Hey Janessa,
I did photograph We The Kings, though the lighting was pretty dim for their performance.
All Time Low’s lighting had much more backlighting than Cobra Starship, but the changes were slower as well, so this show was easier to photograph. With Cobra, the lighting changes were so quick that it was basically light photographing with strobes blasting off.
Love that opening image. Great work Todd.
Hey Craig,
Thanks very much, I appreciate it.
Interesting! I was told no flash at the show, and since that’s usually the standard, I thought nothing more of it (that of course explains why you were using your flash haha!). Looking at your shots, it looks like the flash helped keep the band members’ skin tones from looking blown out from the lighting coming from the platforms, which I had some trouble with. Oh well..in the moments when the frontlighting worked, it seemed to work out just fine!
I’ve got a few shots up at my blog if you want to check ‘em out, which includes a different photo of the panties that flew onstage. I remember telling Dave that at least you 2 guys didn’t get practically hit in the head with them (maybe I should start wearing hats at shows!). But it was pretty comical in the end!
Great shots! All Time Low always have crazy shows with lots of energy and bras and panties are always present when they come on. I saw them October 24th and was told 51 bras were thrown on stage that night. When Jack was behind his microphone you couldn’t even see him because there were so many. It was hard for me to get good pictures of them too because all the crazy lights they have. Thanks for posting these.

Im so glad you got a photo of the underwear! that was another kick arse show. I sent you a very stalker-ish comment on twitter during this show. Im sure you were like what the f. haha
Great shots.

Hi! What settings in your camera did you use? They will have their concert here in Manila this year and I just want to have an idea about the lights that they use for their shows. Thanks!
