I caught up with the guys of The Devil Wears Prada on Monday for a quick portrait session before their performance with Killswitch Engage and Dark Tranquillity. Here’s a peak at a shot of the band’s frontman Mike Hranica.
All the guys were fun to work with, and Mike was especially cool. We were chatting a bit during his solo shots and he mentioned that he’s on Flickr all the time, and actually keeps up with photographers who have shot his band.
Then he surprised me a little by mentioned that I’d shot the #1 most interesting photo his band, according to Flickr. Mike then proceeded to ask if I was going to give them a new #1 live photo.
No pressure, right?
Photographer’s Notes:
The keylight here is a Nikon SB-900 fired through our very own Chinatown Special DIY beauty dish camera left. There’s also a bit of fill from a 45″ umbrella, positioned camera right, and a tiny bit of rim light from behind and the left.
Tech Details:
- Nikon D3 + 24-70mm f/2.8
- ISO 200
- f/9
- 1/60
End Notes:
Stay tuned for the full set of images from the shoot and the live sets for Killswitch, Prada, and Dark Tranquility. In the meantime, you can check out photos of the last time I photographed The Devil Wears Prada here:

Great shot Todd! I love the deep depth of field.
Two things:
Was the sky that grey when you shot, or has it slightly over-exposed due to metering on the subject?
Dark Tranquillity have two L’s in their name, despite the grammatical error this makes. I am a fanboy geek.
Hey Giles,
My bad, I will fix that spelling mistake on Dark Tranquillity, thanks for the heads up.
Regarding the sky for this photo of Mike, it’s actually slightly darker here, but it was basically totally gray and overcast. There wasn’t much detail in it even with underexposure.
Nice shot. I like the contrast between him and the background. Stands out well.
Question for you if you don’t mind with regard to CLS. Since I live near the beach I often have people asking me to do portraits on the beach. I like using rim lighting, but I often have issues getting the flash unit (SB-600) that is behind the subject to fire consistently. Any tip that would make it easier? I am going to be getting an SB-800. I know it an act as a commander, but can I fire the SB-800 with my on camera flash and still have it communicate with the SB-600?
Hey Jay,
Thanks for the comment. CLS and rim lighting that’s directly behind the subject can be tricky, since you’re having to rely on bouncing the IR signal or relaying it. If you’re using just one rim light and one commander, you can either move the backlight so that it’s not directly behind the subject and just off-axis and out of sight. You can also take the commander and use a TTL cord and just get it up and off-axis so the subject isn’t blocking communication.
hey, I was wondering, where can I buy the bracket used to make the beauty dish?
A web link would be perfect
and i quick thank you for your tips and posts,
Damien,
Hey Damien,
You can get the bracket from Lastolite (they have a new version, though, this is with the older version). Other than that, some folks have posted links in the main tutorial for the dish on where they bought their brackets, I believe. Good luck.
thank you vey much :)
