I’d never heard Warpaint before I caught their set opening for The Temper Trap, but, like a lot of concert goers, I came away a fan of the quartet’s buzzy, sprawling art rock. Due to the low light, I rocked all primes, shooting with the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 and Nikon 85mm f/1.4 for the entire set.

For this set, I mostly shot wide open with my primes using the D3 and D700. At these wide apertures and particular glass (which I’d consider a little older style in their rendering in comparison to the super “clean” and cutting edge lenses like the Nikon 14-24mm), I think the dreamy quality worked well for Warpaint’s sound.
While a wider prime option would have been nice, I was pleased just how nicely 50mm and 85mm worked for this set – the band’s setup was pretty perfect for these focal lengths, even with a very narrow photo pit and limited mobility.

Oh yes, another LA band I’m familiar with, and they’re friendly towards photographers, which is a big plus (ditto for another local you’re shooting soon, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros). Great stuff as always.
Hey Koga,
Yes, the band was friendly toward photogs — there was no shooting limit, too. Edward Sharpe is tonight, looking forward to it.
Hi Todd,
Nice photos. I like all the soft pink light on 3rd photo from top. I have 2 questions: do you use any flash to cover live shows or for example this? Did you use flashgun at all or simply high ISO?
And second one more technical: what software do you use to keep your website updates? IS it some sort of CMS?
Cheers,
Kamil
Hey Kamil,
Thanks for the comment. I didn’t use flash for this show, though I probably could have if I’d wanted – there were very few restrictions handed down. But in general, no, I don’t use flash for most shows.
