Once again, it’s summer time, and once again, Dave Matthews Band‘s annual tour is rocking amphitheaters across the country. Touring in support of their 2009 release, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, DMB laid into an extended set that had their fans howling for more.
I’m serious about the howling. Front and center in the pit, I was chatting with a group of fans who had met at the show, bonded, and formed an impromptu gang they called “The Wolfpack.”

I was in the wolfpack!! What an amazing show!! I got my sign signed by dave and he also handed me a pick later that evening. I was also very lucky to get a drumstick from carter. The wolfpack was amazing and so is Dave Matthews band!!
Shannon
Hey Shannon,
Thanks for the comment, glad you saw these. Very cool that you got a drumstick and signed sign. The Wolkpack was great, very friendly folks who were so excited and enthusiastic for the show – gotta love it.
DMB lights always look sooooooooooo bright!!!
what types of iso and shutter speeds were you getting with this show?
i know 2 summers ago, i shot one of their shows at 400 and was still getting shutters hovering around 1000 at points….at iso 800, it was freezing EVERYTHING to a crisp!!!
these look great todd! but whats new ; ) haha…
Hey Kenny,
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, DMB had pretty bright lighting, but it was still more like ISO 1000-1600 for this set. The limiting agent here was mostly the spotlights on Dave – there was some really bright white backlighting that would have been great with brighter spots to balance it out. Thanks again.
hi todd, nice set on one of my favorite artist in the whole wide world dave matthews.i just like to ask when you do post production ps,nikon nx or lightroom what are the normal values you use? for example on this set becaused your shots are so damn clear.
Hi Dr. Neil,
I used Lightroom 3 Beta 2 to process these – haven’t upgraded to the full v.3 of Lightroom just yet. I pretty much use the stock settings with the camera profiles. Since starting to use Lightroom, I barely open Photoshop at all.
Nice ,thanks for the tip todd, what are the adjustments you usually do in your pp using Lightroom 3 Beta 2? So far your site is the best site when it comes to gig photography, lots of info and great photos of great artists.More power man.
Most most images, I will tweak exposure and white balance if/as necessary. Then it’s simply output in a batch process in Lightroom, then uploaded to my image host/service.
No crazy layer adjustments or even curves for most images.
that easy and simple.thanks todd.
Easy and simple – that’s the way I like to keep it. Any more and it’s too much work to be sustainable.
These amazing photos @toddowyoung took of DMB are making me hot for Dave. http://ow.ly/24LjD
