Just a preview shot of guitarist John 5, performing with Rob Zombie at Mayhem Fest 2010. As always, John 5 was a treat to photograph, and, I dare say, a better subject than Rob Zombie himself during their performance at the festival. Photographer's Notes:
This shot was made at ISO 1600 at f/2.8 and 1/800 exposure with the Nikon D3 and the new Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II.
I could have easily used a lower ISO, but the performance of the D3 is so clean at ISO 1600 that I wanted all the stopping power I could get. Did I mention that John 5 was whipping his head back and forth? You can see the motion in the hair, but the 1/800 shutter speed worked great for freezing motion.
End Notes:
Stay tuned for the full sets from ROb Zombie, Korn, Lamb of God, and Five Finger Death Punch at Mayhem Fest, along with all the shooting notes.
In the meantime, check out some of my favorite sets from recent Mayhem Fests:
My Camera DSLR and Lenses for Concert Photography
![]() I use two Nikon D850 for my live music photography. A true do-it-all DSLR with amazing AF, fast response, and no shortage of resolution. |
![]() For most gigs, the 24-70mm is my go-to lens. Exceptional image quality at wide apertures and super-functional range. |
![]() A perfect pair to the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, I can basically shoot any job with the midrange and this lens. Superb image quality. |
![]() Ultra-wide perspective, ridiculously sharp even wide open at f/2.8. I love using this lens up-close and personal, where it excels. |
