Continuing our portrait series, my brother Chris and I caught up with Chicago-based punk rockers The Frantic backstage on Warped Tour. Rolling with a Profoto AcuteB 600R generator and 600 w/s of power, we had plenty of power to work with, even in mid-afternoon sun. Hit the jump for my favorite image from the shoot with this fun four-piece band.
Photographer’s Notes:
This was a great shoot thanks to the enthusiastic guys of The Frantic. Chris and I were shooting backstage at Warped Tour, so locations where a little slim, but we spotted this eagle emblem on the side of one of the trailers that were in the service area of the venue and thought it would make a cool backdrop for the band.
While I normally prefer not to shoot into a flat wall, the eagle and dull metal of the container just seemed too cool to pass up.
The lighting for this set was pretty simple, employing a 3-foot Creative Light Octabox that we used with the Profoto AcuteB 600R system. Daylight did the rest. Generally speaking, the Profoto system was fantastic to work with and the 600 w/s provided more than enough power for what we wanted to do. For most of our work throughout the day, we had a stop or two of power to spare.

End Notes:
Thanks to Kyle, Ian, Chris, and Brett of The Frantic. Thanks my our assistant Allyssa as always for helping on this shoot as well.

last one won’t load here… I love the one with the sky!
Yeah, the one with the super deep sky is my favorite – the exposure worked out such that the sun was behind clouds, allowing for a really nice balance between the strobe light and ambient.
Thanks, that snap of the side of the container with the eagle should be showing up now.
Ha, I just shot their promos…I adore The Frantic.
I do love that backdrop – what a great find at Warped! Great job as always, Todd!
Hey Tasha, great to hear from you. I know you’ve shot the Frantic a ton, so thanks for the “seal of approval!”

That third one is messing with my eyes! It looks like the guys in back are like flat versions of themselves, you know like the commercial with Payton Manning & Justin Timberlake for 3d television?

Great set as usual! You should be teaching workshops.
… Could you have shot all these portraits with something like an SB800 speedlight?
Thanks again for all you share, can’t tell you how much better my concert photography has gotten because of it!
PS… being a nooob.. how can I give back to the community too?
Hi David,
Thanks for the comment. A Nikon SB-800 wouldn’t quite have the power to overpower the ambient light in the same way, but, given the right conditions, it’s entirely possible to make an image like this with speedlights. Check out the photos from last year’s Warped Tour – those were done entirely with speedlights.
