Nearly 20-years after her hit success with 1993′s Fumbling Toward Ecstacy, Sarah McLaughlin closed out Lilith Fair 2010 with a graceful touch, including a duet with Emmylou Harris and the festival’s ubiquitously lovely light.
Photographer’s Notes:
Following acts like Mary J. Blige and Metric, Sarah McLaughlin put on a great shot, and it was an easy, relaxing way to close out Lilith Fair 2010 after a day of great acts and fantastic lighting.
Cameras Used:
Lenses Used:
I shot the majority of McLaughlin’s set with the new Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8, which did a great job handling some of the tricky contrasts of the third song, when bright backlights came up. The Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 was key for wider shots, but the monitors and music stands surrounding McLaughlin blocked a bit too much to employ the lens too much while the singer was at the mic-stand.

Very nice, great capture of the light on the final shot.
Hey Jim, thanks very much. I always try to take a step back and go for a wider, more atmospheric like that whenever I have the presence of mind to do so. Helps add a little variety, I think.

Great photos of two extremely talented singers, well done.
Thanks very much, Ian. It was nice to get another shot at Emmylou Harris – a good surprise at the end of the day.
The rim lighting on the third and last shot are my favs :)
Hey Melly, thanks! Nice to hear from you.
Great captures of the lovely Sarah. Jealous that you got that close to her! ;)

That last shot of Sarah clearly takes the set, in my opinion.
The whole set is very consistent, but that shot is the type of photo that could leave you with a sense of fulfillment even if all the other shots of the night where complete garbage.
Cheers,
Daniel
Hey Daniel,
Thanks so much for all the comments on the recent sets, I really appreciate them. I always try to end a set with an image that I think sums up the event (at least for me), and that last wider shot of Sarah and the lights seemed to have that sense of finality. Thanks again.
Hey Todd,
yeah, sometimes I end up commenting a few sets all at the same time. Even though I check your site frequently, I don’t always have the time to answer and so when I do, I comment on your most recent posts.
About that photo, I just love the blueish look of the lights and how they “pierce” through the dark/black background and “fall” over Sarah. I think it’s a really intense shot, and it’s very representative of her, also intense, music.
That shot alone would sell me the entire set.
Cheers,
Daniel
