Headlining the American Idols Live 2010 tour, season 9 winner Lee DeWyze rocked the Scottrade Center and capped off a night full of big performances from the year’s finalists. As one would expect from the Idol brand, the production on this tour was great, with bright lights and a huge LED wall at the back of the stage.
Photographer’s Notes:
This show was a lot of fun to photograph, in no small part thanks to the stage performance of Lee DeWyze, who rocked with his acoustic guitar under the big lights.
Media photographed the last two songs of Lee’s set, and then the final group medley where the entire ensemble comes back out on stage.
Cameras Used:
Lenses Used:
For this set, I was expecting to use the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 for the majority of my shooting, but it turned out that the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 was the perfect lens for this show. Lee DeWyze came out to the very edge the stage during his performance, which was great for the midrange zoom.
The Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 did come into play for the group medley, when individual members of the tour came out at the back of the stage.
End Notes:

Great work! I especially love the last one.
Thanks, Rok. Lee was really rockin’ out there, he was a great subject to photograph.
No Tim Urban?
No Tim Urban, sorry!
You are my Idol, Todd. These are fabulous. My fellow AI friends will just love these. Thanks!
Hey Louise, thanks very much for the kind words. Hope you and all Idol friends enjoy them. You’re the reason I do this.
Adam by far my fav. Gotta order my pix from I. Good to hear Lee rocked the house!
Hey Mary,
Of course Adam. But what about from season 9? Does anyone come in a distant second to Adam from this year’s show?
It”s said that Adam. “killed” Idol because his performances and the way he approached the contest hasn”t been seen before or since. Part of the reason he has a sold out tour. For season 9 I voted for Lee

Todd, wow! love your work man. Your pics are to die for. Lee is definitely my favorite this season. Casey rocks too though. I have a Nikon D40x that I have tried to take to concerts a few times and I could not get it past security because of the detachable lense and it’s professional quality. Any suggestions on alternative cameras to try in the future?
Thanks very much for the comment.
These are the P&S cameras I recommend for concert photography, but they all have limited zoom so you’re going to have to be right up at the front of the stage:

Great pics. I especially love the last one of Lee.
You made Aaron look gorgeous. I wish he could see these. Maybe he will!
Hey Jane, thanks!
WOW stunning pictures especially of Lee!! YOu really got his passion–especially love the last picture of him. I have followed all the videos available of Lee on this tour and your pictures do him justice and catch the essence of his love for singing for a live audience and then some!! Thanks for sharing them with his fans who can’t get enough of him!!
Hey Cher, thanks very much. Glad to hear these do Lee justice for you and capture his essence – that’s what I strive for.
nice work
Thanks, Maruthi.

Beautiful work Todd! I shot that concert as well using a Nikon D5000 with a 70-200mm lens but I was back on about the 5th row floor. I had a little trouble with the “blue” lighting and all the “fog” effects but I was limited on what I could bring in for flash. When you shoot these shows do you have a pass to be down front with media? I really love your work!! A concert workshop would be amazing!!
