I was hoping to get some more insight into your portraits! Of course I’m interested to see how you did each one, so any start would be great; looking forward to reading about it all.
Hey Constantino,
Thanks for the note – glad to hear there’s some interest in this. If you think of anything in particular you’d like to see, just let me know.

I’d really be interested in seeing anything you’ve done with a single flash. (plus natural light…)
So starting with the basics
Good suggestion – Will definitely be doing some single-light diagrams!
Awesome! I can’t wait, I agree with Chris. It’d be cool to see basics but I think I will enjoy the multi-light set ups as well.
Hey Adam, thanks for the vote. I will try and mix things up with lighting setups and include as much variety as possible.
Again, if there are any particular shoots you want me to start with, just let me know.
Fantastic news!
I am very eager to see them, I already learn a lot from your shoot and notes. Diagrams would be fantastic, if it’s possible maybe you could tell what the intensity of the flashes were.
Thanks for sharing you knowledge!!
Bart
Hey Bart,
Thanks for the suggestion. Since I shoot the flashes on manual, I won’t necessarily have noted the exact power, but I’ll do my best to note the general ratio or ballpark power.
I would love to see some of your outdoor portraits and promo lighting set ups. Also, mark another one up on the single light tally. Thanks so much for doing these. I’ve been excited for these since you first announced them.
Add me to the list for seeing your band promo setups.
It will always be different for different locations, but I’d love if you covered scenarios you’ve run into more than once; i.e., common scenarios. Like, lighting tips for shooting a band between trailers (or in a trailer. Or tips for a quick lighting setup in a bar. Etc
Got it, thanks for the suggestions, Rebecca.
I’d like to see one-light hot shoe setups for those of us just starting out with flash units.
Hi Todd! This is great! I’d love to see how you did the lighting for Owen Pallett!
Thanks for the rec – that Owen Pallett photo would be super easy to diagram, as it was a one-light setup.

Todd, I thoroughly enjoy your work/blog and tune in often. I am interested in your lighting setups where you have both back and forward lighting….like the shot between the trailers. Also, when or if you use studio strobe instead of SBs. Do you ever shoot portraiture on TTL ? Thanks.
Hi Dan,
Thanks for the suggestions, will definitely take those into consideration. To answer your quick question, I almost never shoot on TTL. I shoot my strobes on manual mode just about 100% of the time.
Excellent news! You mentioned the diagrams a while back, and I have been looking forward to seeing them ever since.
As far as lighting diagrams, they can definitely be helpful, but they always seem a little 2 dimensional. You would almost need 2 different diagrams to illustrate the 3rd dimension. Or what would be really cool is to put them in a 3D environment so you could examine the diagram in “real space”.
I wonder if other photographers who do these diagrams have considered doing this.
I have my first solo studio shoot coming up (nervous as heck) and am shooting a 5 person band. I’ve shot them live, have an idea what to do, but am a bit stressed on the light setup.
Would love to see a diagram for the As I Lay Dying shots you did.
Hi Todd,
Would love to see 1 light + natural light setup. =]
Thanks for the vote, Clarence.
Hi Todd,
I too would like to see some techniques for a 1 to 2 light set up. :)
