I have to admit, I’d forgotten just how fun Story of the Year are to photograph. These guys simply lay it all out on the stage, and never was it so clear as it was watching these guys play to a sold out, home show performance at The Pageant.

Photographing Story of the Year is like playing Whac-A-Mole. Just when you snap one band member with a foot up on a monitor and he goes sprinting off to the other side of the stage, someone else comes up. Focus, compose, click. Rinse, repeat. Photographing Story of the Year would be exhausting it weren’t so much damned fun.
I stuck mostly stage left for this show, mainly due to singer Dan Marsala and the way he holds the mic – like most right-handed singers, I found that shooting Dan from stage left provided cleaner sight lines most of the time.
For this set, I used mainly the Nikon D3 and Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, which proved the best combo given the activity and angles.

Awesome shots!
SOTY are a great high energy band, been lucky enough to see them a couple of times, but haven’t photographed them yet.
Hey Jon,
Thanks for the comment. SotY are definitely high energy. So much fun to photograph, though very challenging, too. Hope you get to shoot them soon.
I just wanted to to leave you a quick comment and let you know how much I absolutely love your pictures of these dudes. I’m a huge fan of theirs (15 times in 5 states) and they’re amazing live and I think your pictures capture their amazing live performance really well. Anyways, just wanted to let you know that the pictures are amazing and I hope it’s okay with you that I made that last picture of Dan the wallpaper on my laptop. I love it! :)
