5 Tips For Changing Lenses Faster

Whether you’re shooting live music photography, weddings or any photography that involves quick response, fleeting moments and a limited period in which to execute, changing DSLR lenses is practically a necessity for any event to ensure the best and broadest coverage.

While landscape photographers and macro shooters may have the luxury of leisurely lens changes, for any photojournalist and event shooter with more lenses than camera bodies, quick lens changes are a necessary skill.

Here are 5 tips to changing camera lenses better, faster, and stronger. Think 5-second lens changes are impossible? Read on.

Speed Kills

Any music photographer knows the drill. First three songs, no flash. With some bands ripping  through three songs in what seems like as many minutes, changing lenses quickly is a skill that’s a must for any live band photographer.

A lot of young music photographers are flat out scared to change lenses during a three-song set – whether it’s because of dust, being careful with camera equipment, or irrational paranoia.

With these tips, you should be counting your lens changes in the single digits with ease.

5 Tips For Faster Lens Changes

1) Faster Camera Bags

The number one biggest time suck when changing lenses is not having a camera bag that facilitates easy access and fast lens changes. For me, the ideal bag is one that keeps lenses upright, readily accessible and which has a minimum of flaps with which to contend.

The bags that most readily fit this description are modular belt systems with multi-lens pouches, such as those made by Kinesis or Think Tank’s beltbacks and Skin Series, which are modular systems. For me, the key to these systems is the fact that the bags can be used in such a way that lenses are always accessible, without the need to peel back layers of flaps, excess padding, and zippers.

For users of messenger-style  bags like those from Crumpler, simply having the main flap tucked open can save valuable seconds when you need to change lenses quickly.

Additionally, simply re-planning your camera bag to make your most-used and most-changed lenses the readily accessible can make a big difference while shooting.

2) No Caps

This one is easy – If you want the fastest lens changes, do away with your lens caps head of time. This goes for front and rear lens caps. Simply by removing all lens caps before a shoot means you’ll automatically save time removing, stowing, and replacing caps when you need to change lenses.

Sure, your rear elements are going to be exposed to the perils of flying rocker sweat, champagne spray, or who knows what else. But hey – no guts, no glory.

3) Rethink The Lens Hood

Another sure-fire way to speed your lens changes is simply to do away with lens hoods. Short of that, using lens cases/bags that let you store your lenses with hoods in the shooting position will save time and fumbling.

Alternatively, one great alternative is to use collapsable hoods like the Mamiya M77 Rubber Lens Hood, which are permanently attached and go from storage to active in a quick pop – much faster than detaching a reversible stock lens hood and locking it back on.

4) Practice

This might sound silly, but practicing lens changes will make for faster and more efficient shooting. Sure, you’ve probably changed lenses hundred and thousands of times as a photographer – but if you’ve never practiced for speed, you’re only cruising for complacency.

5) No Fear

My last tip? No fear. No fear of dust, of bumping your lenses, or of getting a fingerprint on the rear element of your lens.

Also: Don’t be a wimp. Making the best images isn’t about how pretty your camera gear looks.

Just say no to lens caps.

Summary

  1. Faster Camera Bags
  2. No Caps
  3. Smarter Lens Hoods
  4. Practice
  5. No Fear

So, there you have it. Five tips to help you with faster lens changes, whether you’re shooting wedding photography or concert photography. With a little planning and a few kit tweaks,  you should be able to get lens changes down to 10-seconds or less with ease, and down to 5-seconds at your most blazing.

Not only will faster lens changes mean you’ll be able to nail the dynamic shots you want, but they should also mean that your DSLR’s sensor should be exposed to dust and outside air for the minimum amount of time.

More than anything, this article is just a detail of thinking and shooting with intent, and optimizing your kit to be as transparent as possible so you can make the images you want. Next time you’re going out to shoot, take a minute to think about your shooting style, your images, and how your gear is going to enable that vision.

If you have your own tips to faster, more efficient lens changes and shooting in general, please leave a comment and share your advice.

  4. Paul says:

Just curious, do you leave the camera switched on when changing lenses?

    • Marc Siegel says:

I’m also curious about this. I generally try to turn the camera off first to lessen the static charge on the sensor, but when I’m in a hurry, I often forget. I guess it’s just more frequent cleaning while in the pursuit of speed…

      • Elisa says:

I always leave my camera on whilst shooting, changing or not – I only switch off if awaiting an extended period of non use…

        • PeteC says:

If your camera has a sensor cleaner option and you can set it to clean at startup, then why not turn it off for the lens change.

That way if you do get some dust on it as per the risk in tip #2, then your sensor doing a self clean as you turn it on might help reduce the post process cleanup.

          • fonzie says:

The auto cleaning steals valuable seconds when turning the body on and off… :/
Get faster, make more money, buy a second both, shoot with both hands! :)

  5. That is a very interesting conversation. Sometimes is already hard to make your way through the other photographers to get a good shot. Imagine doing that AND changing gear in the meantime. I still have got to buy myself a decent bag to help me through this. While I don’t, I’m using two cameras with different lenses. Luckily, it’s been working, but that is not possible in every situation.

And BTW Paul, for myself, i don’t leave the camera on while changing lens. I really don’t know if leaving it on may screw it up.

    Hello Todd! :)
    Nice! Very useful tips.
    I have one too!

If you want to protect your lens and still change them quikly, do what i do!
I use these white caps that came with some cheaper lenses: http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/425/p1003111642.jpg
You can put them in and out very quickly, you don’t have to mount them.
Also, it can be used with Nikon/Canon/… :)

Just recently found this site…first off I’d like to say it’s very well put together…great site and great info. I commend you for feeding the public as much info as you do. Very uncommon nowdays…

    1. wanted to add this…when removing your lens try it with one hand. As you grip the lens use the side of the index finger of that hand to depress the release button as you twist it. Makes for fumble-free removals and it looks cool too!!

    2. Regarding the 14-24…not sure that I would pack that lens without the front cap. I’m currently borrowing that lens from a friend and I would never pack it without the cap. One because it’s not mine but really because the bulbous front element can not take a UV filter which renders it un-protected. Not sure I’d want the front glass rubbing on anything but free space.

  9. Sam Soares says:

because i know i’ll drop them, lose and god knows what else, my solution is simple: have 2 cameras with me with 2 different lenses! (i do some research before on the act so i know what’s been tried and done before and pick the optimum choices)

  10. Clay says:

Wow, no caps. I just can’t do it.
Your Tiger Blood is stronger than mine. ;-)

I like the camera body per lens system, so no changes needed.

  11. groovehouse says:

I understand what you mean by no lens caps… I prep myself prior to shooting. I usually arrive early to a venue, check the shooting situation, then wait. While I’m waiting, I make sure to remove front and rear lens caps, clean my lenses and review screen, check camera settings, then go in and shoot.

I don’t think Todd is advocating totally doing away with front and rear lens caps, he’s just telling us to have them already removed before going into the pit.

After the shoot, I repack my gear and then put the front and rear lens caps back on my lenses and am done.

  12. Felix Mitterer says:

thank you for the great tips! Another thing I do, (mostly when I’m shooting in very very dark venues), is to put a small piece of fluorescent (duct) tape on the alignment mark of the lens, makes it a lot easier to find the right position without playing and fumbling around =)

    felix

    • Mon says:

oh i like this tip! Im totally going to use it.

    • Dan B says:

I do almost the same thing, only with a small strip of black traction or skateboard tape. That way you can get used to mostly aligning the lens by feel so when it’s really dark you don’t have to hunt for the alignment mark.

  13. Elisa says:

bang on post Todd – pretty much on point for all – I am always baffled honestly by this irrational fear of changing lenses…maybe it’s because my first kit was all primes – which necessitated such – you just learn – like you said practice! In one thread in one of the flickr music groups – I remember someone saying, that if you can change lenses you must be shooting jazz – now, no offense to jazz per se – but no! lol… And the part about keeping the caps off – that was one of the first things I figured out I needed to do – luckily I am not that obsessive about stuff – ease won out, well, quite easily!

I use a shootsac shooting bag whenever I can, it just makes swapping lenses so easy and it fits neatly to the body to avoid bulk whilst walking around in narrow pits w/other shooters. While it’s by advertisement a shooting (not carrying) bag – it’s amazing what I fit in it – last night I had 5d2, 7d, 24-70, 100 2.0, 15mm fish, plus a double R strap. Tonight, I have a 5d2, 24-70, 50 1.4, 100.20, 15 fish, flash, flash cord, collapsible mini faux soft box attachment for flash – all these things, and also my wallet and cards/batteries are always there too…and tonight, and umbrella;)

I have another bag for when my kit is bigger – and it’s great for carrying a all my gear, but not so nice for shooting…it’s sometimes hard to figure out what to bring – I try to think ahead to what my shooting situation will be, and pack pratically…

  15. Jay says:

Great tips, Todd. Thanks for the suggestions.

Quick question – which hood do you have on that 50mm in the photo? I think Nikon suggests the HR-2, but I hate how grabby that rubber hood is in a bag. Thanks.

  16. Rob (@rbp2) says:

Great info as usual! I don’t shoot concerts but I can definitely see this being a need to be skillfully – don’t drop those lenses!

I’m a bit limited on gear, so I just have a 7D and typically use a 70-200 f/2.8, 28 f/1.8 and 24 f/2.8 at concerts. What I’ve started doing is keeping the 70-200mm on my R-Strap all the time and letting it dangle when not in use and use my Tenba Messenger bag slung over the other shoulder for the extra lenses.

The bag is a bit big and it takes a bit of conscious effort to make sure that I don’t whack the 70-200 on everything that’s around me but it allows me to make pretty quick lens changes in the pit.

  59. Avinash says:

Great piece of information which is well put together. I am glad someone talked about this. More than the fear it comes to me as a hindrance while I am shooting. Many a times I lost good moments whilst changing lens.
I totally buy all your points but keeping lens without the rear and front cap is quite risky. probably making sure the surface is clean at both the ends would be little safer. And most important zip up (close) the camera lens bag otherwise you might loose all of them (accidentally).

    Thanks for sharing!

‘No caps’ on the back, are you out of your mind ?. Lenses with a price tag of $1500 to $2000 and your advising people to leave rear caps off , in a concert environment ? wow.

With all that can go wrong.

The rear of a lens is very sensitive , if one of the contacts get damaged your lens is out , liquid on the element = focus gone, aperture off , then how are you going to feel when you can’t deliver the images to the client that just hired you.

    This is very bad advice.

Keep rear lens caps on , unless you want a major catastrophe.

  110. @joeyjoeyjoey nope. still just one body for me. luckily i have been versed by @toddowyoung to make quick changes. http://bit.ly/fCNy8P

  111. The quickest way to swap lenses is to have them already mounted on different bodies. Two lenses, two bodies, that should cover most situations if you plan ahead. It’s nicer on your gear too.

  112. Caroline says:

No lens caps?? And them storing them in an open lens bag while shooting???….. not for me…. I shoot weddings on sandy beaches in the Caribbean all the time…. way to risky… having too much dirt as it is already, especially on the mirror because of going in and out of airco/tropical heat. So changing them is killing my gear, also with no proper shop on the island to clean my stuff …..

So two camera’s dangling along my body? With 6-8 hour wedding shoots it is really not an option….. almost can’t stand straight afterwards with only one camera….

I guess I will just have to do with only one lens (17-55mm 2.8) and walk to and fro… :)

    But great tips!!! Thnx!

    - Get the double lens mount caps (http://optechusa.com/accessories/lens-mount-cap.html). This way you can keep body lens cap on without losing time in the change.
    - Use the Fast cap for the front lens cap (http://optechusa.com/accessories/fast-cap-metal-ring.html)

I use the think tank lens changer bags. Best in the world.
