Photos: Flogging Molly @ The Pageant

Simply put, Flogging Molly probably put on one of the most entertaining live shows around, in no small part due to the seemingly limitless energy of singer Dave King.

I’ve photographed Flogging Molly a couple times over the last few years, and every time it’s been a joy. As mentioned previously, Dave King is one of the primary reasons – he’s just a great subject. Whether he’s flicking off photographers, hoisting up a can of Guinness, or just rocking out, King is the king.

Photographer’s Notes:

Cameras Used:

Lenses Used:

This show was great – if you’ve never photographed or seen Flogging Molly live before, add them to your bucket list.

I shot this show with the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 on the Nikon D3 as my main setup, with the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 on the Nikon D700 as the secondary. One of the main reasons for favoring the 24-70mm was Dave King’s frequent trips to front of the stage between the gap in the monitors just to his left.

Lighting wasn’t super bright from the front and overall the treatment wasn’t as “big” as it was the pas two years, but the general look was bright enough to shoot at ISO 3200 at f/2.8 comfortably.

As always, great images! I shoot in the Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago area and always check out your stuff for inspiration and a feel for a show that might be approaching me in the next week.

Love the worm-view perspective showing the rigging. Yet another one of your ideas that I’m going to steal and put in my bag of Todd-tricks.

Excellent pics as always. I took your advice from a previous post and went out and shot a local band tonight. I’m not giving you a run for your money but it was fun.

Excellent shots, as always. If you’re answering questions, you didn’t use any additional lighting? I took your advice from an older post and went out and shot a local band. I won’t be giving you a run for your money anytime soon but it was definitely fun.
I appreciate your generosity of information, you make the art world a better place.

    Hi Todd

Didn’t know you were shooting this show too. I shot them a few nights later in Chicago, and I agree: King is king. Dude had a lot of great energy, very photogenic. You captured him (and the rest of the band) well.

Great set Todd. That first shot is killer!! I shot them this past weekend here in Chicago. Dave King is a madman on that stage. Don’t know how he finds the energy to do it every night.

I shot them in Pittsburgh at the beginning of the month. The venue only let me shoot for the first 3 songs, which meant they were still getting warmed up a bit and the band wasn’t as active. Not to mention, they had quite a few monitors that left you with mic stands in their face when you shot between them.
