Photos: DJ Tiësto @ The Pageant

 (Todd Owyoung)

Superstar DJ Tiësto turned The Pageant into a sweaty, throbbing dance club that seemed to have all the boundless, high energy of a festival performance mixed with the intimacy of a nightclub.

This show was nuts. First off, the ground rules were a little different. With this being continuous dance music being mixed by Tiësto, the whole concept of “first three songs” was out the window. Instead, shooting rules were the first 20 minutes of the performance. Generally speaking, this was more than enough time to shoot.

Knowing Tiësto might have a large lighting rig for his booth on stage, I came prepared with a carbon fiber monopod and a set of the Phottix Strato wireless triggers to use as a remote shutter release. To this end, I dedicated my Nikon D700 and 14-24mm f/2.8 to the monopod rig. And while I thought that it might come in handy for Tiësto, what I really used this setup for more than anything was shooting photos of the crowd.

For my main shots of Tiësto, I used the Nikon D3 and Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8, with a little supplemental help from the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8.

Lighting on the crowd was generally very bright when the white lights came up, but for Tiësto, I shot mainly at ISO 3200.

Overall, a very, very fun gig to shoot thanks to the energy of the crowd.

My Camera DSLR and Lenses for Concert Photography

Nikon D850:
I use two Nikon D850 for my live music photography. A true do-it-all DSLR with amazing AF, fast response, and no shortage of resolution.
nikon-24-70mm-f28-lens-squareNikon 24-70mm f/2.8:
For most gigs, the 24-70mm is my go-to lens. Exceptional image quality at wide apertures and super-functional range.
Nikon-70-200-squareNikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR:
A perfect pair to the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, I can basically shoot any job with the midrange and this lens. Superb image quality.
nikon-14-24mm-f28-lens-squareNikon 14-24mm f/2.8:
Ultra-wide perspective, ridiculously sharp even wide open at f/2.8. I love using this lens up-close and personal, where it excels.
