While I’d seen The Joy Formidable before in concert, it wasn’t until their set opening for Cage the Elephant that I finally got a chance to shoot them.

I had the feeling that the Joy Formidable’s set would be on the dimmer side, and my hunch was correct. However, while the band wasn’t very brightly lit from the front of the stage, the background effects were amped up enough that it provided a gorgeous, airy effect.
Light levels were around f/1.4 at ISO 3200 and 1/160 or so. Not bright, but well within “range” of the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 and Nikon 85mm f/1.4 that I used.
The only real regret I have about this show is that the stage of the Pageant and wedges created such a high wall. Will definitely have to catch these guys again as soon as possible.
