Slayer—2013 Official Promotional Portrait
I have some exciting news. I’m very pleased to announce that the band Slayer are licensing an image I made of them for their official 2013 promotional portrait. Excuse me while I silently scream and shake my arms in the air. Right. With that out of the way, I have to say that for me, [...]
Portraits: Justin Waters
Last year in one of my favorite promo sessions, I headed to sunny Miami’s South Beach to photograph electronic music producer Justin Waters. Justin flew me to shoot a set of promotional images for a new press kit he was putting together and we shot over the course of two days on the South Beach [...]
Preview: Option Control Photo Shoot
Here’s a little preview from a recent shoot with my friends Option Control toward the end of last year. We did a studio shoot to produce new promo photos and had a blast in the process. Aside from being pros in front of the lens, and just solidly cool guys in general, Option Control had [...]
Portraits: Drummer DJ Swanson
Don’t be fooled by DJ’s name – he’s a drummer through and through. You may recall DJ Swanson from the shoot with his band Interplause late last year. For this set of solo portraits, we decided to try something a bit different, and shot DJ with one of his Yamaha drum kits. I thought this [...]
Preview: Drummer DJ Swanson
Quick preview of drummer and friend DJ Swanson from a promotional shoot we did recently. You may recall DJ from the shoot with his band Interplause. I took the opportunity to test out the new Pocketwizard ControlTL units for Nikon on this shoot – the Pocketwizard FlexTT5 and Pocketwizard MiniTT1.
Portraits: Interplause
I caught up with the duo Interplause last month to shoot a set of band promos while also having a great workshop, working with up-and-coming music photographer Colleen Allison on lighting technique. Here are some of my favorite images from the shoot.
Portraits: Owen Pallett
Before photographing The National at The Pageant, I had the pleasure of meeting up with musician Owen Pallett for a photo shoot. One light, a beauty dish, and a little ambient light later, here are the results.
Portrait: Reel Big Fish
Right before they hit the stage at The Pageant, I met up with Reel Big Fish for a quick portrait in their dressing room. With a quick timeframe and a tight space, I went into this shoot with a handful of Nikon SB-900 speedlights and Phottix Strato triggers to get the job done.
Portraits: The Secret Handshake, Luis Dubuc
Kicking off his headlining tour for Night & Day, Luis Dubuc – AKA The Secret Handshake – rocked the Firebird with A Cursive Memory, The Narrative and Speak. Before the gig, I caught up with Luis for a portrait shoot with two looks – one outside nearby the venue, and another in the venue itself.
Portraits: Cancer Bats
In July, I caught up with the Cancer Bats while they were on tour with As I Lay Dying and Underoath for The Cool Tour 2010. For these shots, I used a simple two-light set against a simple backdrop for a slightly moody shot with a little graphic pop.
Portraits: Breathe Electric
Hanging out in the hot, hot sun on Warped Tour 2010, Chris and I met up with electro-pop wiz kid Grant Harris – AKA the brainchild of Breathe Electric – slapped a Nooka watch on him, and snapped these portraits.
Portraits: Andrew W.K.
As the first shoot of the day for Warped Tour 2010, my brother Chris and I weren’t quite sure what to expect for party rocker Andrew W.K. The question wasn’t whether or not he would bring the party – but rather, how hard?
Portraits: The Frantic
Continuing our portrait series, my brother Chris and I caught up with Chicago-based punk rockers The Frantic backstage on Warped Tour. Rolling with a Profoto AcuteB 600R generator and 600 w/s of power, we had plenty of power to work with, even in mid-afternoon sun. Hit the jump for my favorite image from the shoot [...]
Portraits: Everest
Before their show at the Firebird, I caught up with L.A.-based Everest, who gracefully endured rampant humidity for a portrait shoot. Having toured with the likes of Neil Young, My Morning Jacket, and Wilco, I was looking forward to meeting up with the guys and shooting with an approach that would compliment the band’s Americana-infused [...]
Portraits: Four Year Strong
As one of the last sets of the day, we caught up with Four Year Strong at Warped Tour as part of our portrait series. By the time we set up with the 5-piece from Massachusetts, the sun was low enough in the sky to create a little drama in the clouds.
Portraits: After Midnight Project
Jason Evigan, frontman for L.A.-based band After Midnight Project, took a few moments to pose for the Browyoungs. With a nicely blue sky dotted by clouds, we set Jason up in front of a field backstage at Warped Tour 2010. Profoto as the key light and the sun for backlighting did the heavy lifting here.
Portraits: Andrew W.K., Warped Tour Preview
There are portrait subjects, and then there are performers like Andrew W.K. My brother, fellow professional music photographer Chris Owyoung, and I caught up with the hard-partying rocker on Warped Tour 2010, and Andrew was nothing less than a pleasure to photograph.
Portraits: VersaEmerge @ The Bamboozle
You never know who you’ll run into at a music festival. It may be a fellow music photographer, a fan who’d written just days before, or rising Fueled By Ramen stars VersaEmerge.
Photoshoot: Melissa Etheridge
Your favorite music photographer siblings had a great shoot with rock icon Melissa Etheridge as she celebrated the release of her tenth studio album, Fearless Love. Chris] and I did some stealthy backstage reportage of Melissa’s radio interview followed by a quick portrait shoot and coverage of an intimate performance for a lucky group of die-hard [...]
Portraits: Music Photographer Kenny Williamson
Recently, my friend and fellow music photographer Kenny Williamson commissioned me to shoot a set of portraits for inclusion in the launch of his new website. For this portrait session, Kenny was interested in producing a set of images shot at his home turf of the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, where he’s the house photographer for [...]
Portraits: Band Of Skulls
While they were out on tour with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, I met up with Band of Skulls for a quick portrait session. Even fresh from SXSW, the three-piece was lovely to photograph. High speed sync, a few fast prime lenses, my DIY beauty dish, and a sunset later: here are the results.
