Ryan Bingham & the Dead Horses

bingham

Country singer Ryan Bingham and the Dead Horses performing at Farm Aid 2009. I just saw the film Crazy Heart, a drama staring Jeff Bridges in a pretty fantastic role as Bad Blake, a hard living country singer in what seems like the twilight of his career. While Bad Blake plays with a string of [...]

John Mellencamp @ Farm Aid

After a day of heartfelt but somewhat mellow performances, I have to admit that I was surprised when John Mellencamp took the stage and Farm Aid 2009 turned into a no-holds-bar rock fest.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony 2009

Cleveland rocks. With legendary performers on-stage and in the audience, five-thousand die-hard rock fans, and a fire under my butt to deliver for a national client, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for 2009 was easily one of the year’s best and most challenging events.

El Monstero

In the first night of their soldout, six-night residency at the Pageant, El Monster y Los Masked Avengers blazed on stage with a powerhouse spectacle that showed why this show continues to be one of the highlights of the year for so many Pink Floyd fans.

As a music photographer, every gig presents a new challenge and an opportunity to make great images, but as 2009 comes to a close, it’s time to look back at some of the best tours, festivals, and events of the year.

Brookroyal

Supporting Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, and Sick Puppies, hard rockers Brookroyal opened up the evening with a big show for the Scottrade Center.

Breaking Benjamin

Following support from Papa Roach and Sick Puppies, Breaking Benjamin played to a packed out arena with a legion of fans singing along with every word.

Papa Roach

Hard rockers Papa Roach attacked the stage following Sick Puppies to deliver a fiery performance for the packed out house of the Scottrade Center.

KISS

Capping off their Alive/35 Tour, KISS stormed the Sprint Center in Kansas City in an a bombastic, over the top performance that had the arena rocking full-tilt, with nary a butt in any of the 20,000 seats.

VersaEmerge

After our portrait shoot, VersaEmerge flew out of the gates to start off the Love Drunk Tour properly with a crushing performance that the tone for the sold-out show at the Pageant.

A Rocket To The Moon

One shot of A Rocket To The Moon’s Nick Santino, performing with his band on the Love Drunk Tour with Cobra Starship and Boys Like Girls.

All Time Low

Punk-poppers All Time Low rolled into the Pageant with a big, rollicking show that had the sold-out house thumping and underwear flying onto the stage.

Rocking out on the Love Drunk Tour with Boys Like Girls, Cobra Starship – everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure – stormed the Pageant with a high-energy show that had the fans heaving against the barricade for a little piece of Gabriel Saporta.

Rob Zombie stormed the Pageant on his “Hellbilly Deluxe 2 Tour,” bringing an onslaught of hair whips, devil horns, and massive red lighting.

Ludo

Ludo are one band that’s basically a little slice of music photographer heaven: an infectiously upbeat band (with equally energetic fans) who mugs from the first song to the last. And of course, the band always allows photographers to shoot their entire set, so if you’re in the photo pit, you’ll have the chance to [...]

Ha Ha Tonka

If Ha Ha Tonka are playing your city, grab your camera and your dancing shoes, because these guys bring a great show to the stage.

Mastodon

While Mastodon was graced with some of the more interesting light of the night, quick changes and a stack of monitors on the stage made this anything but a cake-walk of a shoot. Still, the sheer intensity and delivery of Mastodon is enough to win over any music photographer even in spite of ghoulish color [...]

Preview: Tim Convy of Ludo

Just a quick preview from Ludo’s show at the Pageant last night, with Tim Convy mugging for the audience. Tim is one of the nicest guys in the business, lays down a mean Moog line, and is always fun to photograph.

Neil Young @ Farm Aid 2009

Neil Young was one of the reasons I was most excited for Farm Aid, due to the fact that the singer infrequently allows photographers access to him, and the yearly benefit is one of those rare occasions.

Willie Nelson @ Farm Aid 2009

The cover of the October 8, 2009 Riverfront Times featuring my photo of Willie Nelson. The granddaddy himself, Willie Nelson, closed out Farm Aid 2009 in a blowout performance that had the crowds on their feet and singing along in the perfect end to the benefit concert.

With a heavily backlit set and dramatic underlighting, Brand New ripped into their sold-out show at the Pageant in support of their 2009 release, Daisy.

Kings of Leon

Backed by dramatic lighting, the Followill clan brought an epic set of the rock music to the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. In the first three songs, we saw just about all the kinds of lighting you’re likely to see at a show: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Blink-182

Under bright, high-contrast spotlights, Travis Barker, Mark Hoppus, and Tom DeLonge came together as Blink-182 to tear it up on their 2009 reunion tour.
