Preview: Florence + The Machine @ The Pageant
Quick preview from tonight’s show with Florence + The Machine at the Pageant. Some shows are eye candy for fans, and while this was true, Florence Welch was pure photo candy for music photographers like me. Such a pleasure to shoot.
Photos: Aquabats @ The Pageant
Opening up for Reel Big Fish, your favorite costumed third-wave ska heroes The Aquabats ripped through their characteristically high-energy set with pelvic thrusts, karate kicks, and lots of blue spandex.
Photos: Asking Alexandria @ The Pageant
After getting in a solid hang with Adam Elmakias, we headed to the Pageant to catch the Reckless & Relentless Tour, headlined by UK metalcore kids Asking Alexandria. I hadn’t seen many photos of this tour, and what I did see of the band seemed shrouded in a thick, seemingly impenetrable fog. Usually, this doesn’t [...]
Photos: Flogging Molly @ The Pageant
Simply put, Flogging Molly probably put on one of the most entertaining live shows around, in no small part due to the seemingly limitless energy of singer Dave King. I’ve photographed Flogging Molly a couple times over the last few years, and every time it’s been a joy. As mentioned previously, Dave King is [...]
Photos: Clutch @ Pop’s
Opening for Motörhead, Clutch brought their blues-tinged hard rock down like a sledgehammer on an extremely sold-out crowd. Somewhat surprisingly, Clutch also had the most photogenic lighting of the night with just the right amount of haze and big, bold splashes of backlighting.
Photos: Interpol @ The Pageant
Three words come to mind for Interpol’s stage treatment at their Pageant show: Moody. Dark. Perfect.
Photos: School of Seven Bells @ The Pageant
I didn’t know anything about School of Seven Bells going into this concert, but I came away a little bit in love with this band after their opening performance for Interpol at the Pageant. With a lush, layered sound and the lighting treatment to match, School of Seven Bells was a treat. Even though their [...]
Photos: Wild Tiger @ The Pageant
I’ll be honest. I had no idea what to expect with Wild Tigers opening up for Story of the Year at the Pageant, and most of that came from their Myspace page. What I gleaned was that they have songs titled “Hot Woman In Dark Denim” and “The Alligator (Sex In The Swamp),” and a [...]
Preview: Story of the Year @ The Pageant
While I don’t normally post crowd photos as the lead, I have to give it up to the fans present at the Story of the Year show at the Pageant this past weekend – they were rocking as hard as the band. As frontman Dan Marsala said as he looked out over the 2,300 fans [...]
Portrait: Deluka in Brooklyn, 2010
Here’s one photo from a promotional shoot I did with the band Deluka in mid-2010. The funny thing about this photo is that all day we were working with a Profo AcuteB 600 and a Creative Light 5′ Octabox, but this snap shot with 100% ambient light turned out to be one of my favorites.
DIY Beauty Dish Band Portraits
It’s been a full year since I designed and built my first DIY beauty dish, the “Chinatown Special.” So, after shooting with the dish for all of 2010 and the year coming to a close, I thought I’d put together a collection of band promos and portraits lit with this inexpensive light modifier that’s made [...]
Photos: El Monstero
Epic. That’s the word that most readily comes to mind to describe El Monstero’s show for 2010, which featured a gigantic stage in-the-round to bring Pink Floyd’s masterpieces to the masses.
Portraits: Interplause
I caught up with the duo Interplause last month to shoot a set of band promos while also having a great workshop, working with up-and-coming music photographer Colleen Allison on lighting technique. Here are some of my favorite images from the shoot.
Preview: El Monstero @ The Pageant
Just a preview of El Monstero performing at the Pageant – and equally notable, the huge production and setup they crammed into the venue.
Photos: Brookroyal @ The Pageant
You know what I love to see? A band that rocks out so hard that not even horrible lighting can stop the goodness from being captured in pixels. Brookroyal is one of those bands, so when they opened for My Chemical Romance, I knew I had to catch their performance – lighting be damned.
Photos: My Chemical Romance @ The Pageant
I never had the opportunity to photograph My Chemical Romance in the glory days of the hugely theatric Black Parade days, when the band was rocking out with spotlights, costumes, and all that glorious high production. But photographers: Never fear. The band is still a blast to shoot. But you better come prepared, or they [...]
Photos: Cake @ The Pageant
Low light, fast gestures, f/1.4 primes, and the tightest photo pit in the world – piece of Cake, right?
Preview: My Chemical Romance @ The Pageant
Here’s a small preview from My Chemical Romance’s sold-out performance at the Pageant this week – the one and only Mikey Way. Another snap of his bro Gerard after the jump.
Portraits: Owen Pallett
Before photographing The National at The Pageant, I had the pleasure of meeting up with musician Owen Pallett for a photo shoot. One light, a beauty dish, and a little ambient light later, here are the results.
Photos: Lifehouse @ The Pageant
After Kris Allen’s performance, it was time for the main event: Lifehouse at the Pageant.
Photos: Skillet @ The Pageant
Opening up for Papa Roach, Skillet tore up the Pageant in a hugely energetic show that was simply a blast to photograph.
