Photos: The Dillinger Escape Plan @ The Pageant
I’ll be frank: The Dillinger Escape Plan are probably the only band that may actually elicit fear from me as I wait for them to take the stage. I’ve shot DEP several times now, and, simply put, their show is a visceral assault on the senses.
Photos: Arcade Fire, The Suburbs Tour
Arcade Fire put on a pretty killer live show. The band has always had a big, orchestral sound, but it wasn’t until seeing them live filling an arena that it all came together for me. The band’s set closer of “Wake Up,” with the entire room chanting back, before their encore drove the point home.
Preview: Deftones @ The Pageant
Just a preview snap from the show last night. Needless to say, Chino always puts on a great performance.
Photos: Queens of the Stone Age @ The Pageant
After an opening set by the Dough Rollers, Queens of the Stone Age pummeled the sold-out crowd of the Pageant with heavy riffs and an explosive lighting treatment. As one fan tweeted after the show, “‘Scorched’ is the most accurate way to describe what just happened.”
Photos: DJ Tiësto @ The Pageant
Superstar DJ Tiësto turned The Pageant into a sweaty, throbbing dance club that seemed to have all the boundless, high energy of a festival performance mixed with the intimacy of a nightclub.
Photos: Deluka On Tour
Just a few snaps and behind the scenes coverage of one of my favorite bands in NYC, Deluka. The fine folks of Deluka were performing at a conference where there was a very short performance, followed by a meet and greet appearance. You may recall Deluka (if you didn’t know them already) from the promotional [...]
Photos: Asking Alexandria @ The Pageant
After getting in a solid hang with Adam Elmakias, we headed to the Pageant to catch the Reckless & Relentless Tour, headlined by UK metalcore kids Asking Alexandria. I hadn’t seen many photos of this tour, and what I did see of the band seemed shrouded in a thick, seemingly impenetrable fog. Usually, this doesn’t [...]
Photos: Cage The Elephant @ The Pageant
Cage the Elephant – if you haven’t seen these guys live, do yourself a favor and check them out. I came away really impressed by the energy of the band, especially from singer Matthew Shultz and his frantic movements over the stage.
Photos: Escape The Fate @ Pop’s
I’ve had the pleasure of photographing Escape The Fate last year at The Bamboozle, and so I was very curious to see how the band’s energy translated from festival to club. As it turns out, the explosive power of these guys is as much fun in a smaller venue, if not more.
Photos: Valient Thorr @ Pop’s
I’d heard good things about Valient Thorr – some people chiming in that they were in fact the more fun to shoot than both Motörhead and Clutch. Bold, bold words. And yet, true.
Photos: Story Of The Year @ The Pageant
I have to admit, I’d forgotten just how fun Story of the Year are to photograph. These guys simply lay it all out on the stage, and never was it so clear as it was watching these guys play to a sold out, home show performance at The Pageant.
Photos: Ozzy Osbourne @ Scottrade Center
Ozzy Osbourne. He’s been called the Prince of Darkness and the Godfather of Heavy Metal. In my second gig shoot of the year, I finally crossed off Ozzy from my music photography bucket list. Needless to say, the music icon did not disappoint.
Photos: Cake @ The Pageant
Low light, fast gestures, f/1.4 primes, and the tightest photo pit in the world – piece of Cake, right?
Photos: Grace Potter & The Nocturnals
Grace Potter’s performance opening up for The Avett Brothers blew me away. Even with almost no light on the stage and steep shooting angles, the opportunity to capture a little of her charisma was a pleasure. With a very dim stage treatment, I turned to Nikon f/1.4 primes to help open up the darkness.
Photos: Kings of Leon
Returning to Verizon Wireless Amphitheater after the infamous “Pigeon Gate,” Kings of Leon made right in their make-up performance in St. Louis, much to the delight of fans. However, with their standard shooting restrictions in place, Kings of Leon were as challenging as ever to photograph.
Photos: Hanson, Shout It Out Tour
Hanson brought the Shout It Out Tour to a house full of adoring fans at The Pageant in the most energetic show I’ve seen from the brothers to date. While the lighting wasn’t as beautifully airy as their performance at The Bamboozle Festival in New Jersey, the soft, understated treatment worked well for photographing the [...]
Photos: Mary J. Blige @ Lilith Fair
I came for Metric, but I’m glad that I stayed for Mary J. Blige. For me, MJB stole the show at Lilith Fair, hands down. Great lights, supreme confidence in the stage performance, a killer cover of “Stairway to Heaven.”
Nick Jonas & the Administration
Stepping out on his own with a veteran group of musicians, Nick Jonas rocked the Pageant to a sold-out crowd with his new band The Administration. While the two-thousands fans in the audience may have been small by Jonas Brothers standards, the intimate concert was the perfect setting to see the youngest Jonas flex his [...]
Dierks Bentley – ARF Benefit
Headlining the 2010 Animal Rescue Fund Benefit, rising country music star Dierks Bentley capped off the night with a rockin acoustic set. Even with limited shooting options, nice stage lighting and a great vibe made this concert great for photography.
Sick Puppies
One thing I like about photographing three-piece bands? It keeps things simple. But just because Sick Puppies have a minimum of members, one should never underestimate their intensity.
El Monstero
In the first night of their soldout, six-night residency at the Pageant, El Monster y Los Masked Avengers blazed on stage with a powerhouse spectacle that showed why this show continues to be one of the highlights of the year for so many Pink Floyd fans.
