Photos: Janelle Monae @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2010-11-01 at 10.08.05 AM

Going into this show, I had a feeling that Janelle Monáe would have a pretty dim treatment. After all, Of Montreal has been touring with a minimal/non-existent lighting setup and generally relies on the house lights for the past few years, so I didn’t dare hope that Monáe would receive any special treatment (even though [...]

Photos: Of Montreal @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2010-10-25 at 5.10.08 PM

Of Montreal were one of the very first bands I shot, back in 2006. The first time I photographed them was at a basement venue called the Gargoyle, which is literally the annex of a university cafeteria turned sometimes-performance-space. From there, I’ve shot them at other clubs and festivals, including the Pitchfork Music Festival in [...]

Preview: Of Montreal @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2010-10-22 at 3.44.14 PM

To go along with the preview of Janelle Monáe, who kicked off the evening, here’s a little preview for Of Montreal’s performance at the Pageant last night. In contrast to the band’s early performances where everyone was pretty much up front, singer Kevin Barnes was clearly the center of attention for this show.

Photos: Everest @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2010-10-21 at 9.34.04 AM

Opening for Guster at the Pageant, LA-based Everest threw down a set of spacious rock that had the crowd bopping before the main event. I’d caught up with Everest earlier this year for a portrait shoot, but wasn’t able to catch their live set, so I was glad – and impressed – finally getting to [...]

Photos: Papa Roach @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2010-10-20 at 9.48.47 AM

After Papa Roach’s killer performance last year at the Scottrade Center supporting Breaking Benjamin, I was psyched to hear that they were coming back to the Pageant. With killer lights, rockstar moves from frontman Jacoby Shaddix and guitar hero antics from Jerry Horton, there’s a lot to like about PR’s show. The only question for [...]

Screen shot 2010-10-19 at 2.56.23 PM

I have to admit – I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with Guster, even after doing a little research on their 2010 tour. To my surprise, the band delivered a great, upbeat show with a surprisingly nice stage treatment for their performance at the Pageant.

Photos: Michael Franti & Spearhead

Screen shot 2010-10-13 at 5.04.08 PM

I last saw Michael Franti & Spearhead open for John Mayer on the Battle Studies Tour with a huge, high energy performance. When I heard that they were coming to the Pageant, I knew that I had to cover the gig to see how they rocked a club.

Photos: Drake @ The Fox Theater

Screen shot 2010-10-14 at 8.08.11 AM

After catching Drake at the Bamboozle in New Jersey this spring, I was excited to get an assignment to cover his headlining performance at the Fabulous Fox Theater. While his festival show had alright lighting, it was really Drake’s fun an engaging performance that really made for compelling images. For his gig at the Fox, [...]

Photos: Alice Cooper @ The Halloween Hootenanny

Screen shot 2010-10-12 at 10.20.15 PM

Co-headlining the Halloween Hootenanny and the return of the Gruesome Twosome with Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper brought the big theatrics in a performance that left no doubt that the King of Shock Rock still reigned supreme.

Photos: Alice in Chains, Black Diamond Skye Tour

Screen shot 2010-10-08 at 4.18.30 PM

After catching Alice in Chains at the 2,000-capacity Pageant earlier this year, I was very curious as to how the band would transition into an arena show at the Scottrade Center. As it turned out, the band rocked the big house just as deftly as they did the club, with a big production and the [...]

Photos: Drive-By Truckers

Screen shot 2010-10-04 at 3.39.58 PM

The Drive-By Truckers put on a sprawling, epic rock show that I first had the privilege of photographing back in 2008. In their return to the Pageant for 2010, I was back in the pit and hungry for images that might live up to the set of the band’s previous 29-song set. For me the [...]

Photos: Mastodon, Black Diamond Skye Tour

Screen shot 2010-10-07 at 8.34.33 AM

Opening for the Deftones and Alice in Chains, Mastodon brought the sludgy, roaring metal to the big house of the Scottrade Center. That, and all the colors of the rainbow in their lighting treatment – as long as your rainbow only includes red, green, and blue.

Photos: The National

Screen shot 2010-10-06 at 11.06.28 AM

The first time I photographed The National was when they performed at the Pitchfork Music Festival years back in 2006, with a second shot in 2008 at Lollapalooza. Now with a couple of years under my music photographer’s belt, I was excited at the opportunity to photograph the band again, and at my stomping grounds [...]

Preview: Michael Franti & Spearhead

Screen shot 2010-10-06 at 9.19.07 AM

I first photographed Michael Franti & Spearhead opening for John Mayer on the Battle Studies Tour 2010, and after witnessing their high-energy show, I was excited to shoot them again at the smaller house of The Pageant. Here’s a preview from last night’s show, showing Michael Franti in usual form, engaging the audience with ease. [...]

Photos: Vampire Weekend & Beach House

Screen shot 2010-10-04 at 5.12.46 PM

Indie rock darlings Vampire Weekend brought their sunny indie pop to the big hall of the Chaifetz Arena with support from Beach House to cap off the first weekend of Rocktober 2010.

Photos: Deftones, Black Diamond Skye Tour

Screen shot 2010-10-04 at 9.00.01 AM

Opening for Alice in Chains on the Black Diamond Skye Tour, the Deftones gave an incendiary performance at the Scottrade Center with the lighting as explosive as frontman Chino Moreno’s delivery.

Photos: The Whigs

Screen shot 2010-09-27 at 3.22.29 PM

I’ve seen the Whigs on a few occasions, but their performance opening up for the Kings of Leon was by far their biggest yet. Not only that, but I dare say that the Athens-based band put on the most photogenic set of the night.

Photos: The Avett Brothers

Screen shot 2010-09-27 at 10.16.27 AM

You know it’s a good show when there are banjos being shredded. That, and that it’s an Avett Brothers show. The Avett brothers were one of the very first bands I ever photographed back in 2006, so when I heard that they were returning to the Pageant, I knew that I had to cover the [...]

Photos: Queensryche

Screen shot 2010-09-21 at 6.38.25 PM

Closing  a day of pummeling hard rock and metal, Queensrÿche threw down on the main stage of the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Before the band took the stage, I was chatting with fans. One asked me if I’d ever seen Queensryche live before. When I replied that I hadn’t, he simply said, “He has a voice [...]

Photos: Tesla

Screen shot 2010-09-21 at 10.07.01 AM

Performing after a long rain delay and an epic lighting storm. hard rockers Tesla proved that the show must go on. While all the guys of Tesla rocked, for me, this show was all about Frank Hannon and his Gibson Flying V.

Photos: The Flaming Lips

Screen shot 2010-09-20 at 10.41.44 AM

Returning to the Pageant in their near-annual pilgrimage, The Flaming Lips brought their legendary live performance to a sold-out crowd and left an aftermath of confetti, streamers, and laser glow in its wake.

Photos: Hurt

Screen shot 2010-09-13 at 12.43.24 PM

As far as I’m concerned, any performance where the singer comes out to rock the barricade during the first three songs is a good one. Such was the case with singer J. Loren Wince and Hurt’s mainstage performance at Pointfest 27, supporting Avenged Sevenfold.

Photos: Seether

Screen shot 2010-09-08 at 11.15.17 PM

South African post-grunge rockers Seether brought a moody, dense set to the Pageant with the dim stage lighting to match. It’s shows like this that I have to thank Nikon for f/1.4 primes and ISO 3200.

Photos: Apocalyptica

Screen shot 2010-09-04 at 4.52.32 PM

Cellos, drums, and hairwhips: Apocalyptica are, as Tenacious D put it, “classically trained to rock your f***ing socks off.” I’d last photographed Apocalyptica back in 2008, and ever since I’ve wanted a chance to shoot the band again. When I heard that they were performing on a co-headlining tour with Japanese rockers Dir en grey, [...]
