The last time I caught Suicide Silence, they were opening up for Megadeth. And while the lineup had changed and shuffled, Suicide Silence found themselves playing before Megadeth once again at Mayhem Fest 2011, among other heavy music heroes like Disturbed, Godsmack and Machine Head. Still, for all the main stage drawing power, Suicide Silence [...]

After a seething, blisteringly hot day of metal, Disturbed closed down Mayhem Fest 2011 on the main stage. As always, Mayhem Fest included an absolutely beautiful stage treatment with big lights, lots of haze, and for Disturbed, pyrotechnics.

Trivium closed down the Jägermeister stage at Mayhem Fest. At one point about halfway through their performance, singer Matt Heafy paused to encouraged the audience to essentially do whatever they wanted to do to enjoy the show, whether it was relaxing or getting sweaty in the pit, in contrast to other bands of the day [...]

In my opinion, Megadeth stole the show at Mayhem Fest. Their set was the one I was most looking forward to at this event, and the thrash metal legends did not disappoint. Aside from the performance itself, Megadeth received a perfect combination of stage lighting, haze, and natural light for what I thought was one [...]

After Godsmack took the stage, frontman Sully Erna announced that the band didn’t bring any fancy effects, confetti, or pyro. They only brought the rock show, and then proceeded to demonstrate that fact. For me, this was an excellent shoot due to how well drummer Shannon Larkin was lit, not to mention the great expressions [...]

Melodic death metal heroes In Flames closed down the Revolver stage at Mayhem Fest 2011 with a full on attack. While singer Anders Fridén has cut off his dreads since the last time I photographed the band, there were still plenty hair flying on stage. Proof after the jump.

Just back from Mayhem Fest 2011, and as always, it was a great event to photograph. Despite unrelenting heat throughout the day, there was just too much great metal to photograph to get too bogged down. Here’s a small preview from the day, including photos of Megadeth, Disturbed, Suicide Silence and Machine Head.

Capping the metal Mayhem Fest, nu metal pioneers Korn stormed the main stage in what was one of the most challenging – and rewarding – sets of the day. Spastic lights, heavy thrashing, and a line of imposing monitors at the front of the stage meant press had to bring their A-game for this intense [...]

Love him or hate him, Rob Zombie is an undeniable showman, and his performance at Mayhem Fest 2010 was the perfect showcase for his twisted circus. With plenty of pyrotechnics, theatrics, and the one and only John 5 as his lead axeman, Zombie was guaranteed crowd-pleaser for Mayhem.

Following the cakewalk-shoot of Five Finger Death Punch, Lamb of God at Mayhem Fest was a whole other story. Green and blue washes, lots of hair whips, and the frenetic movements of singer Randy Blythe made this set a true challenge. However, for all the difficulties, every time Blythe came to the front of the [...]

Just a preview shot of guitarist John 5, performing with Rob Zombie at Mayhem Fest 2010. As always, John 5 was a treat to photograph, and, I dare say, a better subject than Rob Zombie himself during their performance at the festival.

July 22, 2009 – What do you do when you get five minutes with thrash metal kings Slayer? You make sure you know all of the band member’s names, you dial in your lights, and you don’t think about the fact that they’ve been crushing eardrums and melting faces since the time you were in [...]

Taking the stage after Mastodon, Britain’s DragonForce picked up the metal hammer and took it into the stratosphere with soaring vocals, blazing guitar solos, and epic amounts of hair.
