Photos: Suicide Silence @ Pop’s

Screen Shot 2012-01-19 at 12.09.28 PM

Suicide Silence is a band that I was first introduced to when they opened up for Megadeth a couple years ago. Since then, I had the pleasure of catching them on Mayhem Fest 2011, and was again impressed by their energy and stage presence. So when I heard that they were opening for Machine Head, [...]

Preview: Dillinger Escape Plan @ Terminal 5

Screen shot 2011-11-24 at 1.05.03 PM

While the set as a whole was over the top – which is saying a lot of Dillinger Escape Plan – one of the true highlights was seeing the band’s original vocalist, Dimitri Minakakis, take the stage at the end of the set to close out the show. Greg Puciato and the band are intense enough, [...]

Quick preview from tonight’s show with the Dillinger Escape Plan. These guys are one the most difficult bands to photograph live, but they’re also one of my favorite concert subjects. For all the strobes and impossible stage lighting they use, the energy they bring to the stage is immense – not just sometimes, but every [...]

Supporting A Day To Remember, Underoath delivered their signature ferocity on stage at Pop’s to a feverish, soldout crowd of 1,700+.

Portraits: Underoath, The Cool Tour

Screen shot 2010-09-17 at 9.09.41 AM

While they were out on The Cool Tour with As I Lay Dying, Blessthefall, Cancer Bats, and others, I met up with metalcore heroes  Underoath for a portrait session before the gig. For this editorial shoot, we did two quick looks: one setup with the bright afternoon sun on their backs for a natural rimlight, [...]

I’d never seen As I Lay Dying before, but after their headlining performance on The Cool Tour, I came away mightily impressed. And, shooting the band’s full set, a whole lot more deaf.

Portraits: The Devil Wears Prada

Two weeks out on their “Back To The Roots” tour, I caught up with metalcore heavyweights The Devil Wears Prada for a quick portrait session. With sweltering heat outside, we decided to stay cool and shoot indoors doors as much as possible. For the first look, we used a five-light setup, cranked up the stage [...]

Opening for Killswitch Engage, The Devil Wears Prada delivered a performance of signature intensity. Characterized by massive breakdowns, relentless energy, and one questionable ‘stache, for this music photographer, these guys stole the show.

Underoath

November 2, 2008 – Following performances by The Devil Wears Prada and Saosin that left the stage raw and bleeding, Underoath came out to deliver the final blow of metalcore mayhem.

Portraits: Underoath

What do you do when you have 15 minutes to photograph a Grammy-nominated band on a pitch black loading dock? You dial in the lights, hold onto your butt, and let it fly. That’s the plan going in, anyway.

The Devil Wears Prada

Screen shot 2010-03-18 at 5.52.19 PM

Opening the floodgates for crowd surfers, metalcore sextet The Devil Wears Prada showed off their chops as devout practitioners of the breakdown.

Atreyu @ Projekt Revolution

Closing down the Revolution Stage at Projekt Revolution, metalcore band Atreyu came out blazing with a hard-hitting set that had the fans rocking the barricade with every blast beat breakdown and vocal attack.

Underoath @ Mayhem Fest

Led by the charismatic Spencer Chamberlain, metalcore goldenboys Underoath delivered a frenetic set that had the barricades heaving and the crowd surfers coming in waves.

Photos: Avenged Sevenfold, Taste of Chaos Tour 2008

What’s more sweet than one guitarist playing at the front of the stage, one foot up on the speaker monitor? Two guitarists, one right-handed, the other left-handed, each with a leg up on a monitor, mirrored in perfect, hard rock harmony. It’s kind of a beautiful thing.

Every Time I Die @ the Pageant — 2008.01.26

Opening for Killswitch Engage and Dillinger Escape Plan, Buffalo’s Every Time I Die laid down a tight set of their signature blend of metalcore and Southern metal at the Pageant.

Killswitch Engage @ the Pageant — 2008.01.29

The Pageant is packed with kids wearing black t-shirts who all want three things: face-melting riffs, pummeling double-bass, and a guitarist who isn’t afraid to wear a cape. Headlining four performances and following Dillinger Escape Plan, Killswitch Engage delivered on all accounts with a heavy dose of melodic metal that had the pit heaving.

Avenged Sevenfold @ the Pageant — 2007.11.06

Right out of the gate, you have to recognize one simple fact. These guys are rockstars. Unleashing a furious set on the sold-out crowd, Avenged Sevenfold brought to their rabid fans a dynamic mix of heavy metal and hard rock tinged with notes from their metalcore roots.

HIM @ the Pageant — 2007.10.26

HIM‘s performance at the Pageant brought the Finnish band’s self-proclaimed Love Metal to an adoring crowd. After being sonically assaulted by the metalcore barrage of Bleeding Through, Ville Valo and fellow Fins brought a more melodic version of metal-laced rock wrapped around Valo’s own sailing vocals.

Bleeding Through @ the Pageant — 20007.10.26

The metalcore band Bleeding Through opened for HIM on Friday night, initially shocking a crowd unprepared for the brutal attack the band brought. Though the majority of the house had come for the more melodic stylings of Ville Valo and crew, many seemed to warm up to the unrelenting double bass and blast beats during [...]
