Photos: Black Label Society @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-06-06 at 12.05.35 PM

Pretty sure I filled my hairwhips quota early in 2011. Of course, that’ll happen when you have full-set shooting access to Zakk Wylde and Black Label Society. That, and getting axe-kicked in the head – but hey, this is rock ‘n roll. And not even a potential concussion was going to stop me from bringing [...]

Photos: Sevendust @ Pointfest

Screen shot 2011-06-02 at 11.07.30 AM

Sevendust was a blast to photograph. I’d never seen them live, but the energy they put into their performance at Pointfest was exactly the kind that any music photographer can love.

Photos: Papa Roach @ Pointfest

Screen shot 2011-05-31 at 1.44.35 PM

Whether you’re a fan of their music or not, I have to say that Papa Roach are undeniably fun to shoot. Big moves, hard rock, and pit-heaving screams made this one a highlight of Pointfest and a nice warm-up for Korn.

Photos: Jason Aldean @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheater

Screen shot 2011-05-22 at 11.13.52 AM

Jason Aldean brought his “My Kind of Party” tour to the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater and a sold-out crowd of over 18,000 strong. Way back in 2009, my brother Chris and I shot material for an advertising campaign with Jason Aldean for Wrangler Jeans. At the time, Aldean was a rising star, but still supporting larger [...]

Photos: The Dillinger Escape Plan @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-05-02 at 11.45.47 AM

I’ll be frank: The Dillinger Escape Plan are probably the only band that may actually elicit fear from me as I wait for them to take the stage. I’ve shot DEP several times now, and, simply put, their show is a visceral assault on the senses.

Photos: Arcade Fire, The Suburbs Tour

Screen shot 2011-04-26 at 12.41.13 PM

Arcade Fire put on a pretty killer live show. The band has always had a big, orchestral sound, but it wasn’t until seeing them live filling an arena that it all came together for me. The band’s set closer of “Wake Up,” with the entire room chanting back, before their encore drove the point home.

Just a preview snap from the show last night. Needless to say, Chino always puts on a great performance.

Photos: Bassnectar @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-04-20 at 11.09.09 AM

Bassnectar. Think about it – it’s like an ambrosia of sweet, thick bass for your ears. And to this end, Lorin Ashton and his stagename deliver in spades, with a huge array of bass stacks lining the stage and slamming waves of the low stuff. Oh, and you have to love any performing artist that [...]

Photos: Lil Wayne, I Am Still Music Tour 2011

Screen shot 2011-04-18 at 5.03.05 PM

On his return to the stage mere months after his release from Riker’s Island, Lil Wayne’s I Am Still Music Tour rocked the Scottrade Center and 12,000 fans strong with support from Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Mix Master Mike and Travis Barker. Even from the soundboard, I have to say that this was a pretty [...]

Photos: Plain White T’s @ The Pageant

I’ve photographed the Plain White T’s several times over the last couple years, from their 2008 run on the Honda Civic Tour to their headlining tour in 2009 for Big Bad World, and every time it’s been a blast. On their 2011 tour for Wonders of the Younger, the T’s high energy show was no [...]

Opening up for Lil Wayne on the I Am Still Music Tour, Travis Barker and Mix Master Mike performed in an epic set mixing turntablism and live drumming.

Two shots from Bassnectar last night. It was a party, needless to say. And yes, Lorin Ashton lives up to the “bass” part of his name – I’m not sure how much good the earplugs did; my skull is still rattling.

How to Photograph Drummers

Screen shot 2011-03-29 at 2.15.46 PM

As I’ve mentioned before, one of the very first pieces of music photography advice I ever received was simply, “Don’t forget the drummer.” It came not from another photographer, but from a guitarist in a band I’d befriended when I first started shooting concerts. I was hanging out with the band in their dressing room before [...]

Screen shot 2011-03-20 at 11.36.02 PM

There are some bands that fulfill your expectations for live performances. There are others that never live up to the hype. Then, there are those rare shows that come out of left field when a band comes out on stage and smacks you across the face with a show that’s so fun it leaves you [...]

Photos: DJ Tiësto @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-03-20 at 11.22.12 PM

Superstar DJ Tiësto turned The Pageant into a sweaty, throbbing dance club that seemed to have all the boundless, high energy of a festival performance mixed with the intimacy of a nightclub.

Photos: Deluka On Tour

Screen shot 2011-03-21 at 2.42.18 PM

Just a few snaps and behind the scenes coverage of one of my favorite bands in NYC, Deluka. The fine folks of Deluka were performing at a conference where there was a very short performance, followed by a meet and greet appearance. You may recall Deluka (if you didn’t know them already) from the promotional [...]

Low light for openers Sleeper Agent before Cage The Elephant? No problem – just grab some primes.

Screen shot 2011-03-17 at 12.55.45 AM

I have to admit – the energy & vibe for Tiësto’s show at the Pageant could go toe to toe with any arena rock show. Here’s a preview from tonight’s show.

Photos: Asking Alexandria @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-03-15 at 1.12.19 PM

After getting in a solid hang with Adam Elmakias, we headed to the Pageant to catch the Reckless & Relentless Tour, headlined by UK metalcore kids Asking Alexandria. I hadn’t seen many photos of this tour, and what I did see of the band seemed shrouded in a thick, seemingly impenetrable fog. Usually, this doesn’t [...]

Photos: Legends of Hip Hop Tour 2011

Screen shot 2011-03-14 at 4.41.47 PM

The Legends of Hip Hop Tour 2011 rolled through the Chaifetz Arena along with some of hip hop’s earliest and most influential artists, including Kool Moe Dee, Doug E. Fresh, Salt ‘n Pepa, Biz Markie, Kurtis Blow, and MC Lyte.

Portraits: Drummer DJ Swanson

Screen shot 2011-03-08 at 2.49.03 PM

Don’t be fooled by DJ’s name – he’s a drummer through and through. You may recall DJ Swanson from the shoot with his band Interplause late last year. For this set of solo portraits, we decided to try something a bit different, and shot DJ with one of his Yamaha drum kits. I thought this [...]

Photos: Flogging Molly @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-03-10 at 4.47.11 PM

Simply put, Flogging Molly probably put on one of the most entertaining live shows around, in no small part due to the seemingly limitless energy of singer Dave King. I’ve photographed Flogging Molly a couple times over the last few years, and every time it’s been a joy. As mentioned previously, Dave King is [...]

I just got from shooting this show and I’m putting my edit on hold to post this – and simply put, sometimes there are images that just can’t wait.

Photos: Dropkick Murphys @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-03-06 at 12.54.36 PM

If you want a band that keeps you on your toes, look no farther than Dropkick Murphys. I’m surprised singer Al Barr didn’t wear a groove in the stage from  his constant pacing at the front to a packed house of four-thousand raised fists. The energy of Dropkick Murphys is a real force, both in [...]
