Photos: Foxy Shazam @ The Pageant
I’d heard the stories about Foxy Shazam. And after photographing their live show opening for Hole, now I know. Now I know.
Photos: Chuck Berry @ The Duck Room
After the recent scare in Chicago where Chuck Berry collapsed from exhaustion, I was thrilled at the chance to cover the music icon at an intimate performance last week. While he may have missed a few notes, slowed down a few of his blazing classics and passed the mic to his daughter on occasion, this [...]
Photos: Ogre You Asshole @ The Pageant
There are just some shows where primes are a necessity, even with high ISO. Maybe the Nikon D3s could have pulled this show off with f/2.8 zooms and ISO 12800, but I wholeheartedly say that ISO 3200 and f/1.4 primes on the Nikon D3 was a lifesafer photographing Japanese indie rock band Ogre You Asshole.
Photos: Lifehouse @ The Pageant
After Kris Allen’s performance, it was time for the main event: Lifehouse at the Pageant.
Photos: Kris Allen @ The Pageant
I love when performers go to the edge of the stage to give fans some love at the start of the show, as Kris Allen did on the big stage of the Pageant. The fans love it, it makes for great images, and it completely changing the show right out of the gate. Kris Allen [...]
Photos: Aaron Lewis @ The Pageant
Performing alone on the big stage of the Pageant on his Solo & Acoustic Tour, Aaron Lewis seemed right at home.
Photos: Janelle Monae @ The Pageant
Going into this show, I had a feeling that Janelle Monáe would have a pretty dim treatment. After all, Of Montreal has been touring with a minimal/non-existent lighting setup and generally relies on the house lights for the past few years, so I didn’t dare hope that Monáe would receive any special treatment (even though [...]
Preview: Aaron Lewis – Solo & Acoustic
Aaron Lewis, frontman of the rock group Staind, performing on his Solo & Acoustic tour at the Pageant. While lighting was quite low on Lewis, a combination of VR and fast f/1.4 made the most out of this treatment.
Photos: Rob Zombie @ The Halloween Hootenanny Tour
Headlining the Halloween Hootenanny Tour stop at the Family Arena, Rob Zombie and crew ripped into their set with signature zeal and showmanship. While I’d caught Rob Zombie on the Mayhem Fest tour earlier this year, I was just as excited to see what the band would bring this time around.
Photos: Of Montreal @ The Pageant
Of Montreal were one of the very first bands I shot, back in 2006. The first time I photographed them was at a basement venue called the Gargoyle, which is literally the annex of a university cafeteria turned sometimes-performance-space. From there, I’ve shot them at other clubs and festivals, including the Pitchfork Music Festival in [...]
Preview: Of Montreal @ The Pageant
To go along with the preview of Janelle Monáe, who kicked off the evening, here’s a little preview for Of Montreal’s performance at the Pageant last night. In contrast to the band’s early performances where everyone was pretty much up front, singer Kevin Barnes was clearly the center of attention for this show.
Preview: John 5, Rob Zombie @ The Halloween Hootenanny
Don’t tell Rob Zombie, but he always plays second fiddle for me – When I shoot a Zombie show, my favorite subject is his guitarist, John 5. Sure, Zombie has dreadwhips going for him, but there’s something magnetic about John 5′s more reserved intensity (I know, this is relative – how reserved can you be [...]
Photos: Murderdolls @ The Halloween Hootenanny
Opening up the The Halloween Hootenanny with Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie, Murderdolls put on a fantastic show that proved that showmanship trumps spastic lighting design.
Photos: Queensryche
Closing a day of pummeling hard rock and metal, Queensrÿche threw down on the main stage of the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Before the band took the stage, I was chatting with fans. One asked me if I’d ever seen Queensryche live before. When I replied that I hadn’t, he simply said, “He has a voice [...]
Photos: LouFest 2010 – Day 2
The second day of the first-ever LouFest saw bigger crowds, higher temperatures, and tons of great music, including performances by She & Him, Jeff Tweedy, Alejandro Escovedo, Fruit Bats, Cory Chisel, and more.
Photos: Gogol Bordello @ Lollapalooza
After hearing so much about their chaotic and wonderfully photogenic live show, I finally got my crack at Gogol Bordello breaking in the main stage during the second day of Lollapalooza 2008.
Photos: Common
Hip hop is probably one of the more challenging genres of music to photograph. With often animated stage presences, quick movements, and mic-in-the-face performances for many rappers, clean shots are no easy matter. Common’s performance in downtown St. Louis was no exception. Thankfully, the production had some nice lighting effects, so together with Common’s command [...]
Photos: Avenged Sevenfold
What’s the only thing better than two guitarists mirrored in hard rock perfection, shredding for their lives? Probably when you have pyrotechnics blowing up behind them that make it look like there are flames shooting out of their guitars. Headlining Pointfest 27, Avenged Sevenfold brought the rock show to Verizon Wireless Amphitheater and a legion [...]
Photos: Brooks & Dunn, Last Rodeo Tour
Closing out twenty-years as the best-selling musical duo of any genre, Brooks & Dunn rocked the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in a big farewell show on the Last Rodeo Tour. The day of the show, I received an email from fellow music photographer Chris Bradshaw that gave me a tip-off that made some great images possible.
Photos: Sarah McLachlan @ Lilith Fair
Nearly 20-years after her hit success with 1993′s Fumbling Toward Ecstacy, Sarah McLaughlin closed out Lilith Fair 2010 with a graceful touch, including a duet with Emmylou Harris and the festival’s ubiquitously lovely light.
