Nikon D7000 – High ISO Samples
As I tweeted earlier, the new Nikon D7000 is on-deck. A full review is coming, but first I thought I’d share a few high ISO samples from tonight’s El Monstero show at the Pageant, for which I used the D7000 exclusively. A 100% crop after the jump.
Review: Nikon 24mm f/1.4G AF-S
While Canon users have been overpaying for beautiful fast primes for years, Nikon shooters have long been denied this privilege, with a distinct lack of “modern” choices in the arena of fast glass. In particular, many have lamented the absence of fast, wide-angle option, especially after the discontinuation of the Nikon 28mm f/1.4 AF-D in 2006. [...]
Review: Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR
Five-years after the release of Canon’s popular 24-105mm f/4 L zoom, Nikon has finally thrown a wide-range, constant-aperture contender into the ring: the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR. Following the introduction of the Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR, Nikon’s new wide-angle to telephoto 5x zoom packs a hugely useful range into a compact form factor. However, all the [...]
Comparison Review: Tamron 28-75mm VS Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8
I often get asked about alternatives to the expensive pro lenses from Canon and Nikon. As I rely on the standard f/2.8 midrange zoom for much of my work, I thought that I’d take the time to look at some popular third-party options: the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 and the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 zooms. Just like [...]
Review: Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S
Even with increasingly stunning high ISO performance in DSLRs, there’s just no substitute for fast glass. After years of neglect, Nikon’s introduction of the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF-S marked the start of a new era for F-mount primes. The new AF-S lens features a built-in Silent Wave Motor, drops the aperture ring, and features a [...]
New Nikon D7000, 35mm f/1.4, SB-700 Speedlight
Today Nikon has announced a lot of fun toys ahead of Photokina in Cologne, Germany next week. There’s just about something for everyone in the announcements, but what peaks my interest are the new Nikon D7000 DSLR, a brand new 35mm f/1.4 prime lens, and the SB-700 speedlight.
Nikon Announces new 85mm f/1.4 & 24-120mm f/4
Both the new Nikon 85mm f/1.4G AF-S and Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR have long been rumored, and they’ve finally been officially announced along with Nikon’s new HD video-capable DSLR, the Nikon D3100. For me, the most interesting announcements are the pro-grade 85mm and 24-120mm lenses – my thoughts on these announcements after the jump.
Portraits: Deluka – Test Shoot
Sometimes before a full-fledged shoot, I’ll do a test shoot with a band as an introduction and to develop a rapport with the client. Such was the case when I met up with the British band Deluka on their new turf in Brooklyn earlier this month.
Lightroom 3 Beta – Improved Camera Profiles, Highlight Rendering
Hot on the heels of the Beta 2 release, Adobe Labs has released new and improved camera profiles for the Nikon D3 and D700. Considering that those are the two cameras I shoot day in and day out, Adobe had my keen attention. So, how do these new profiles stack up to the gold standard [...]
Nikon Announces 24mm f/1.4 & 16-35mm f/4
Nikon has just announced two new lenses – the Nikon 24mm f/1.4 and Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR. With the new 24mm f/1.4, Nikon has finally offered an update to fill the niche left by the discontinued Nikon 28mm f/1.4, but is it too little, too late? What do these lenses mean for music photography?

Fresh from conquering Vans Warped Tour 2009, Chris and I met up with metalcore sluggers August Burns Red. Naturally, we did it up with wireless flash CLS style for a series of on-location band portraits. All the shooting notes after the jump.

Attracted to Gods: Behind the Scenes
Here’s a quick behind-the-scenes video my friend Dave shot while assisting on last week’s promo shoot with Minneapolis rockers Attracted to Gods.
Portraits: Semi Precious Weapons
Just before their headlining performance at the Blender Theater in NYC, Semi Precious Weapons took some time out to to do a set of promos with the Owyoung Brothers. What do you get when you throw together New York’s glam rock saviors and your very favorite pair of Asian brothers? All the damage after the [...]
Bring Me The Horizon @ Taste of Chaos
March 11, 2009 – There’s one band to go, but from the way the floor is heaving and the front row is screaming, you’d never know it. As the UK’s Bring Me The Horizon lays down the brutality of breakdowns, death growls, and chugging riffs, the thought occurs that they might not know either.
Preview: Andrew Bird
March 15, 2009 – Here’s one shot from Andrew Bird’s sold out show at the Pageant last night. As always, Bird put on a fantastic show, but his annual performance always has special meaning for me as a photographer.
Preview: Taste of Chaos 2009
March 11, 2009 – Hearts were broken, ribs bruised, and eardrums blown. Yes, ladies and gentleman, the Taste of Chaos Tour has come and gone, leaving a wake of beautiful destruction. Here’s one shot from Toronto’s Cancer Bats.
