Preview: Awolnation @ Pop’s

Screen Shot 2012-01-23 at 5.44.03 PM

Here’s a quick preview from Awolnation’s really, really sold out show at Pop’s this past weekend. The over-capacity venue was truly heaving with Awolnation rocking the stage, complete with tons of crowd surfers enjoying the electro rock of this group.

Photos: Sleeper Agent @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-12-14 at 4.12.59 PM

Reunited with pals Cage The Elephant for their late 2011 tour, Sleeper Agent kicked off the night properly – and photogenically. Lots of lush atmosphere during their set made this a fun shoot despite a wall of monitors along the front of the stage. The fact that singer Alex Kandel often put a boot up on [...]

Photos: Owl City @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-12-07 at 7.50.17 PM

Backed by a great lighting array and a full band, Adam Young, AKA Owl City, put on a great live show. One of the highlights of the show was seeing Young rock out on his guitar for this live show, considering how electronic his studio albums are. Unless you’re Daft Punk, it’s almost always more [...]

Photos: Dillinger Escape Plan @ Pop’s

Screen shot 2011-11-23 at 5.54.46 PM

The Dillinger Escape Plan are one of my favorite bands to photograph. Show after show, they prove themselves on the stage as one of the best live acts on the planet. And not through an elaborate stage production, but seemingly through a force of will to pretty much annihilate themselves on stage every single night. [...]

Photos: Chevelle @ Pointfest 29

Screen shot 2011-09-13 at 3.40.20 PM

Chevelle always put on an intense, grinding set, and their performance at the big stage of Verizon Wireless Amphitheater for Pointfest 29 was no exception.

Preview: The Urge @ Pointfest 29

Screen shot 2011-09-11 at 5.16.48 PM

Just a quick preview of singer Steve Ewing of The Urge in their triumphant reunion show at Pointfest 29 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater this past weekend.

Photos: Greek Fire @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheater

Screen shot 2011-08-22 at 11.09.14 AM

Opening up for Incubus on the big stage of Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, local heroes Greek Fire gave their fans a big dose of the show that’s quickly becoming legend. Greek Fire have been on my radar for a while now, but it wasn’t until this show that I finally had a chance to line them [...]

Photos: Godsmack @ Mayhem Fest 2011

Screen shot 2011-07-22 at 4.44.59 PM

After Godsmack took the stage, frontman Sully Erna announced that the band didn’t bring any fancy effects, confetti, or pyro. They only brought the rock show, and then proceeded to demonstrate that fact. For me, this was an excellent shoot due to how well drummer Shannon Larkin was lit, not to mention the great expressions [...]

Photos: Mumford & Sons @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-06-06 at 3.17.46 PM

Mumford & Sons seemed to be easily one of the most anticipated shows of 2011 at the Pageant, and one of the fastest sell-outs of any show in the 10-years the venue has been open.

Photos: Black Label Society @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-06-06 at 12.05.35 PM

Pretty sure I filled my hairwhips quota early in 2011. Of course, that’ll happen when you have full-set shooting access to Zakk Wylde and Black Label Society. That, and getting axe-kicked in the head – but hey, this is rock ‘n roll. And not even a potential concussion was going to stop me from bringing [...]

Photos: Primus @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-06-06 at 5.15.37 PM

Les Claypool and company stormed the Pageant and rocked a sold-out house with huge inflatable astronauts, a psychedelic lighting treatment, and Claypool’s signature, funky bass lines driving the performance.

Screen shot 2011-06-06 at 10.02.57 AM

Polka, parodies and a parade of costumes characterized Weird Al Yankovic’s crowd-pleasing performance at the Family Arena.

Photos: Rev Theory @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-06-06 at 3.31.13 PM

While I hadn’t seen or heard Rev Theory before photographing them supporting Black Label Society, I had a good feeling. That hunch was more than fulfilled by a hugely entertaining performance by the band. Even with dim lighting, the band – with the help of some super-fast f/1.4 primes – delivered great images.

Photos: Hollywood Undead @ Pointfest

Screen shot 2011-05-31 at 5.07.07 PM

Call them the rap-metal Slipknot, but I will say this: Hollywood Undead and their masks are a fun shoot. Between the theatricality of the masks to the group dynamics with different members taking center stage at any given moment, their set was never dull. Only dimly lit.

Photos: Lil Wayne, I Am Still Music Tour 2011

Screen shot 2011-04-18 at 5.03.05 PM

On his return to the stage mere months after his release from Riker’s Island, Lil Wayne’s I Am Still Music Tour rocked the Scottrade Center and 12,000 fans strong with support from Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Mix Master Mike and Travis Barker. Even from the soundboard, I have to say that this was a pretty [...]

Photos: Plain White T’s @ The Pageant

I’ve photographed the Plain White T’s several times over the last couple years, from their 2008 run on the Honda Civic Tour to their headlining tour in 2009 for Big Bad World, and every time it’s been a blast. On their 2011 tour for Wonders of the Younger, the T’s high energy show was no [...]

Photos: Reel Big Fish @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-03-29 at 2.48.14 PM

Taking the stage after Suburban Legends and The Aquabats, Reel Big Fish closed down the Pageant with a infectiously fun set. With plenty of mugging, general goofiness, and the entire venue singing along, this was an undeniably live set.

Photos: The Architects @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-02-04 at 6.11.10 PM

Opening for Flogging Molly’s 2010 stop at The Pageant, the Architects played a tight set that was a fantastic way to start off the night.

Photos: Asking Alexandria @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-03-15 at 1.12.19 PM

After getting in a solid hang with Adam Elmakias, we headed to the Pageant to catch the Reckless & Relentless Tour, headlined by UK metalcore kids Asking Alexandria. I hadn’t seen many photos of this tour, and what I did see of the band seemed shrouded in a thick, seemingly impenetrable fog. Usually, this doesn’t [...]

Photos: Clutch @ Pop’s

Screen shot 2011-02-21 at 11.21.31 PM

Opening for Motörhead, Clutch brought their blues-tinged hard rock down like a sledgehammer on an extremely sold-out crowd. Somewhat surprisingly, Clutch also had the most photogenic lighting of the night with just the right amount of haze and big, bold splashes of backlighting.

Photos: The Avett Brothers & BR-549

Screen shot 2011-02-10 at 11.21.52 AM

Last night marked the 5-year anniversary of shooting my first concert. I wrote a bit about the show in my post titled “Becoming A Concert Photographer,” but I thought I’d take some time to do a proper post about this show, as well as post images from the gig – The Avett Brothers supporting BR-549 with [...]

Photos: Wild Tiger @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-02-08 at 1.52.57 PM

I’ll be honest. I had no idea what to expect with Wild Tigers opening up for Story of the Year at the Pageant, and most of that came from their Myspace page. What I gleaned was that they have songs titled “Hot Woman In Dark Denim” and “The Alligator (Sex In The Swamp),” and a [...]

Preview: Ben Folds @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2011-01-31 at 11.15.35 AM

Here’s are a couple snaps from Ben Folds last night at the Pageant, which started off with Street Corner Symphony and Ben Folds attacking the stage and running amok for about five minutes. The intro antics also included Ben Folds throwing his stool at his piano and later standing on top of his grand. Proof [...]

Review: Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8

nikon-24-70mm-images-79015

The Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 update in 2007 replaced the venerable Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 – itself a beast of a lens and longtime staple in the bag of many pros. With the latest incarnation of Nikon’s midrange zoom, the 24-70mm f/2.8 features a broader range, Nano Crystal Coating, and a built-in AF motor. What’s more, we [...]
