Preview: Girl Talk @ The Pageant
Here’s a quick preview from Girl Talk’s dance party at the Pageant last night. Not that this should come as a surprise to anyone familiar with the live shows of Gregg Gillis, but this gig was nuts. There was calamity on the dance floor to be certain, but what’s more, the shooting conditions of this [...]
Preview: Ozzy Osbourne @ Scottrade Center
After finally getting to cross off Ozzy Osbourne from my bucket list as a music photographer, I can definitely say that the Prince of Darkness did not disappoint. Here’s a couple teasers from the show. In addition, I think I found music photographer Danny North‘s doppleganger in the crowd.
Photos: Eric Benét @ The Fox
After Kandi warmed up the stage and kicked off the night, R&B singer Eric Benét threw down a smooth performance that had the ladies of the audience dancing in the aisles. I love photographing performers with Benét’s charisma and command of the spotlight – it makes my job easy.
Photos: Kandi @ The Fox
For me, the above lead image of Kandi is just one of those images that make a concert immediately fulfilling as a music photographer. The right pose, the right lighting, and the skill, experience, and luck to capture it all. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have minded some beautiful haze and more backlighting, but Kandi worked all [...]
Nooka Zub Zirc
Recently, I had the chance to visit the Nooka Lab in NYC, birthplace of some of the coolest watches around. It was great meeting up with the team, and I picked up a brand spanking new Nooka Zub Zirc to add to the collection.
Photos: Trey Songz – OMG Tour 2010
Opening up for Usher on the OMG Tour, Trey Songz brought a big dose of charisma to warm up the crowd before the main event at the Scottrade Center. After catching Trey Songz back in 2008, it was a thrill to see him on the big stage of this tour.
Review: Nikon 85mm f/1.4G AF-S
The classic 85mm f/1.4 – a long-admired and respected lens in any mount, and especially renowned as the Nikon AF-D, introduced in 1995. As part of their recent push to update all their fast primes – and introduce a few new ones – Nikon’s new 85mm f/1.4G AF-S with Nano Crystal Coating represents a fully modern [...]
Preview: Usher @ The OMG Tour 2010
Here are two preview images from Usher’s 2010 OMG Tour, which stormed the Scottrade Center last Friday. Though a late contender, I have to say that the OMG Tour is definitely one of the most visually compelling and most fun shoots of the year. Also: Usher can fly – hit the full post for the [...]
Photos: DJ Paul Oakenfold @ Club Europe
I recall listening to Paul Oakenfold’s double-disc mix “Resident” back in 1999 0r 2000; to me, at the time, it was one of those perfect mixes, and one to which I always compared Oakenfold’s other work. Flash forward to 2010, when had my chance to hear, see, and photograph The Guiness Book of World Records’ “most [...]
Photos: The Dresden Dolls @ The Pageant
This may have been an anniversary show ten-years in the making, but for me, I went back four years to July of 2006, when I first photographed the Dresden Dolls opening for Panic! At The Disco at the Pageant. Since that show, I had the honor of photographing them later the same year on their [...]
Photos: Iron & Wine @ The Pageant
Photographing Iron & Wine strikes me as a little zen. With a minimal lighting treatment, very little movement overall, and the lulling sounds of Sam Beam on an acoustic guitar, I think that the music photographer has to work a little harder to make the most of a stark canvas.
Photos: Justin Bieber @ Scottrade Center
This show was a little insane. First of all, there are the 14,000+ screaming fans filling the Scottrade arena. Then there’s the 6′+ stage and a very narrow (single file) photo pit. And then there’s the fact that Justin Bieber could probably have a pretty good career in track if he weren’t one of the [...]
Photos: Lil Wayne @ Chaifetz Arena
With respect to the buzz of Lil Wayne’s release from Riker’s Island today after an eight-month stint on lockup, I thought I’d post some of my favorite shots from Weezy’s 2008 performance at the Chaifetz Arena. This was an epic one-off performance in-the-round with a cruciform stage where photographers had full-set access. Easily one of [...]
Photos: Roger Waters @ Scottrade Center
30 years after it’s album release, Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters rocked the Scottrade Center with an epic production of The Wall in a shoot that for me was as much fun as it was an honor. What’s more for this legend: five songs from the pit (instead of the standard three) and no photo [...]
Preview: Roger Waters Performing The Wall
Happy Rocktober, everyone. Rounding out a month of 15 assignments, the last one was Roger Waters of Pink Floyd performing The Wall. Not a bad way to end the month, especially when it means shooting a legend for five songs from the pit.
Portraits: Cancer Bats
In July, I caught up with the Cancer Bats while they were on tour with As I Lay Dying and Underoath for The Cool Tour 2010. For these shots, I used a simple two-light set against a simple backdrop for a slightly moody shot with a little graphic pop.
Photos: Michael Franti & Spearhead
I last saw Michael Franti & Spearhead open for John Mayer on the Battle Studies Tour with a huge, high energy performance. When I heard that they were coming to the Pageant, I knew that I had to cover the gig to see how they rocked a club.
Photos: Grace Potter & The Nocturnals
Grace Potter’s performance opening up for The Avett Brothers blew me away. Even with almost no light on the stage and steep shooting angles, the opportunity to capture a little of her charisma was a pleasure. With a very dim stage treatment, I turned to Nikon f/1.4 primes to help open up the darkness.
Photos: Lee DeWyze, American Idols Live
Headlining the American Idols Live 2010 tour, season 9 winner Lee DeWyze rocked the Scottrade Center and capped off a night full of big performances from the year’s finalists. As one would expect from the Idol brand, the production on this tour was great, with bright lights and a huge LED wall at the back [...]
Photos: Phoenix
Phoenix sounded fantastic in their first appearance at The Pageant, a show I’d been looking forward to ever since it was announced. How’d they look, though? As long as the lights were up, the band looked great, but this set was a huge challenge with a mixture of strobes, projection, uplighting, and just about everything [...]
