Portrait: Deluka in Brooklyn, 2010
Here’s one photo from a promotional shoot I did with the band Deluka in mid-2010. The funny thing about this photo is that all day we were working with a Profo AcuteB 600 and a Creative Light 5′ Octabox, but this snap shot with 100% ambient light turned out to be one of my favorites.
Photos: Girl Talk @ The Pageant
This was an interesting shoot. I was very curious about the setup for this show, as I’d only seen one set of photos with a killer shot of Gregg Gillis from this tour and they seemed to be from on stage. There’s a reason for that. The table where Gregg performs from is about a [...]
Preview: Girl Talk @ The Pageant
Here’s a quick preview from Girl Talk’s dance party at the Pageant last night. Not that this should come as a surprise to anyone familiar with the live shows of Gregg Gillis, but this gig was nuts. There was calamity on the dance floor to be certain, but what’s more, the shooting conditions of this [...]
Photos: DJ Paul Oakenfold @ Club Europe
I recall listening to Paul Oakenfold’s double-disc mix “Resident” back in 1999 0r 2000; to me, at the time, it was one of those perfect mixes, and one to which I always compared Oakenfold’s other work. Flash forward to 2010, when had my chance to hear, see, and photograph The Guiness Book of World Records’ “most [...]
Portrait: Reel Big Fish
Right before they hit the stage at The Pageant, I met up with Reel Big Fish for a quick portrait in their dressing room. With a quick timeframe and a tight space, I went into this shoot with a handful of Nikon SB-900 speedlights and Phottix Strato triggers to get the job done.
Portraits: Cancer Bats
In July, I caught up with the Cancer Bats while they were on tour with As I Lay Dying and Underoath for The Cool Tour 2010. For these shots, I used a simple two-light set against a simple backdrop for a slightly moody shot with a little graphic pop.
Portraits: Andrew W.K.
As the first shoot of the day for Warped Tour 2010, my brother Chris and I weren’t quite sure what to expect for party rocker Andrew W.K. The question wasn’t whether or not he would bring the party – but rather, how hard?
Portraits: The Frantic
Continuing our portrait series, my brother Chris and I caught up with Chicago-based punk rockers The Frantic backstage on Warped Tour. Rolling with a Profoto AcuteB 600R generator and 600 w/s of power, we had plenty of power to work with, even in mid-afternoon sun. Hit the jump for my favorite image from the shoot [...]
Portraits: Four Year Strong
As one of the last sets of the day, we caught up with Four Year Strong at Warped Tour as part of our portrait series. By the time we set up with the 5-piece from Massachusetts, the sun was low enough in the sky to create a little drama in the clouds.
Portraits: After Midnight Project
Jason Evigan, frontman for L.A.-based band After Midnight Project, took a few moments to pose for the Browyoungs. With a nicely blue sky dotted by clouds, we set Jason up in front of a field backstage at Warped Tour 2010. Profoto as the key light and the sun for backlighting did the heavy lifting here.
Portraits: Deluka – Test Shoot
Sometimes before a full-fledged shoot, I’ll do a test shoot with a band as an introduction and to develop a rapport with the client. Such was the case when I met up with the British band Deluka on their new turf in Brooklyn earlier this month.
Portraits: Andrew W.K., Warped Tour Preview
There are portrait subjects, and then there are performers like Andrew W.K. My brother, fellow professional music photographer Chris Owyoung, and I caught up with the hard-partying rocker on Warped Tour 2010, and Andrew was nothing less than a pleasure to photograph.
Neil Young @ Farm Aid 2009
Neil Young was one of the reasons I was most excited for Farm Aid, due to the fact that the singer infrequently allows photographers access to him, and the yearly benefit is one of those rare occasions.
Preview: Farm Aid
Just a quick preview from the Farm Aid 2009 concert last night, which featured performances by Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, Wilco, and others.
Portraits: Attracted to Gods
May 22, 2009 – I caught up Nate Collis and Brian McLeod of Attracted to Gods, a rockin’ two-piece band from Minneapolis.
Portraits: DragonForce
April 24, 2009 – I caught up with the guys of DragonForce for a quick portrait session on their Ultra Beatdown World Tour. 10 minutes start to finish: here are the shots.
Portraits: Bleeding Through
February 22, 2009 – Taking a moment from bringing the crushing, melodic metalcore to their adoring fans, I met up with the OC’s own Bleeding Through for a quick portrait shoot.
