In the moments before Angels and Airwaves take the stage, the pit is packed to capacity, and even the few people who are pulled over the barricade at the front due to heat exhaustion do little to alleviate cramped quarters. The people are the front are begging roadies for water, one girl has bruises in [...]

The host to Chuck Berry’s monthly residency, Blueberry Hill’s Duckroom, is filling up with bodies and smoke, but tonight, the rock’n roll legend has the night off. By the time Hamilton Leithauser and crew take the stage, it’s just past 11pm, one of my new front-row friends is on his fourth round of Jack, and [...]

Playing barefoot on a large rug situated squarely in the middle of the stage, Keller Williams played to a packed house in his eagerly awaited return to the Pageant.

After a quick photo shoot with the Dresden Dolls prior to their show, it was time to come in for the real deal: the live performance. In their singular brand of “Brechtian punk cabaret,” the Dolls rocked the house in a raucous set that affirmed the duo’s status as one of the best live shows [...]

As much as it’s fun to shoot in beautifully lit venues like the Pageant, that’s not always where the best bands play. Such was the case last week with the October and Go Van Gogh, who opened for Semi Precious Weapons in two solid sets on Cicero’s intimate stage.

Playing to an adoring crowd, Kevin Barnes lead his band Of Montreal through a roaring twenty-song set of psychedelic indie pop at the Pageant. Freed from the precious trappings of their album recordings, the sexed-up live performance delivered a more raucous version of fan favorites while still remaining as pretty as Barnes in eyeliner and [...]

VHS or Beta brought their blend of French house-infused dance-punk to the Blender Theatre in NYC in a performance that had hands waving in the air and feet bouncing off the floors in the old movie house.

Just back from the Pageant, where Brand New performed with support from Thrice and MewithoutYou. It was all feast or famine at this show, with heavy use of strobes and blinding backlighting punctuating relative darkness during Brand New’s set. MewithoutYou, performing first, had a dull red wash for most of the first three, with a [...]
