Kicking off the New Year on January 1, 2011, American Idol season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino rocked the Fox with big pipes after Kandi and Eric Benét opened the show.

After Kandi warmed up the stage and kicked off the night, R&B singer Eric Benét threw down a smooth performance that had the ladies of the audience dancing in the aisles. I love photographing performers with Benét’s charisma and command of the spotlight – it makes my job easy.

For me, the above lead image of Kandi is just one of those images that make a concert immediately fulfilling as a music  photographer. The right pose, the right lighting, and the skill, experience, and luck to capture it all. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have minded some beautiful haze and more backlighting, but Kandi worked all [...]

Preview: Usher @ The OMG Tour 2010

Screen shot 2010-11-28 at 11.57.30 AM

Here are two preview images from Usher’s 2010 OMG Tour, which stormed the Scottrade Center last Friday. Though a late contender, I have to say that the OMG Tour is definitely one of the most visually compelling and most fun shoots of the year. Also: Usher can fly – hit the full post for the [...]

As far as I’m concerned, Jónsi is the reason for Vibration Reduction (Image Stabilization) technology in photography exists. With the extremely low light and low level of movement in the singer, this show was the perfect – and necessary – setting for better shooting through technology.

Trouble comes in three. But so does beautiful music. Photos of Mountain Main opening for Jónsi at the Pageant.

Photos: Janelle Monae @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2010-11-01 at 10.08.05 AM

Going into this show, I had a feeling that Janelle Monáe would have a pretty dim treatment. After all, Of Montreal has been touring with a minimal/non-existent lighting setup and generally relies on the house lights for the past few years, so I didn’t dare hope that Monáe would receive any special treatment (even though [...]

Preview: Of Montreal @ The Pageant

Screen shot 2010-10-22 at 3.44.14 PM

To go along with the preview of Janelle Monáe, who kicked off the evening, here’s a little preview for Of Montreal’s performance at the Pageant last night. In contrast to the band’s early performances where everyone was pretty much up front, singer Kevin Barnes was clearly the center of attention for this show.

Hip hop is probably one of the more challenging genres of music to photograph. With often animated stage presences, quick movements, and mic-in-the-face performances for many rappers, clean shots are no easy matter. Common’s performance in downtown St. Louis was no exception. Thankfully, the production had some nice lighting effects, so together with Common’s command [...]

I came for Metric, but I’m glad that I stayed for Mary J. Blige. For me, MJB stole the show at Lilith Fair, hands down. Great lights, supreme confidence in the stage performance, a killer cover of “Stairway to Heaven.”

Portraits: After Midnight Project

Jason Evigan, frontman for L.A.-based band After Midnight Project, took a few moments to pose for the Browyoungs. With a nicely blue sky dotted by clouds, we set Jason up in front of a field backstage at Warped Tour 2010. Profoto as the key light and the sun for backlighting did the heavy lifting here.

Portraits: Toryn Green

On tour with Apocalyptica, I caught up with singer Toryn Green for a quick shoot just before he took the stage with the Finish metal group. Lighting setup after the jump.

Photos: Kesha @ The Bamboozle

Screen shot 2010-05-17 at 2.29.39 PM

Storming the stage with a feathered headdress, gold leaf, Pixies t-shirt, and attitude aplenty, Kesha’s performance was easily one of the most visually interesting sets of the first day. Say whatever you will about her music, but I had a blast photographing Kesha’s show.

Screen shot 2010-04-17 at 8.18.21 PM

Backed only by a guitarist, Matt Pond opened the night for Ben Folds with a spare and intimate set in the big hall of the Chaifetz Arena.

Rocking a full house at the Chaifetz Arena, Chris Daughtry and band came out of the gate with all guns blazing. Despite a few last minute restrictions, Chris Daughtry’s intensity made this an interesting shoot.

Shooting a legendary musician like Willie Nelson from the photo pit? A pleasure and an honor. For the second time in half a year? That’s just gravy.

Dierks Bentley

June 18, 2009 – Opening up for Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley defied the 100º+ heat index to deliver an aerobic set that saw the country singer bounding over the length of the stage and making ample use of the tour’s three ramps.

Al Green

July 13, 2008 – With a show that begin with him passing out long-stem roses to the ladies in the front row, The Reverend Al Green delivered a spirited performance to a sold-out crowd at the Fox Theatre.

Gladys Knight

July 13, 2008 – Taking the stage with a beaming smile, Gladys Knight, the “Empress of Soul,” thrilled fans with a powerhouse performance that had the entire audience on their feet by the end of the show.

Basia Bulat @ Terminal 5 — 2008.05.20

In a set that ranged between soulful pop and lilting, vibrato-tinged folk, Ontario’s Basia Bulat ripped though a spirited and undeniably charming performance opening for Devotchka at Terminal 5 in NYC.

Hayden @ the Pageant — 2008.04.12

Opening for Feist in a sold-out performance, singer-songwriter and fellow Canadian Hayden crafted a quietly insistent set accompanied by a deep palette of reds, blues, and purples.

Feist @ the Pageant — 2008.04.12

“This is a new song I haven’t recorded yet,” the singer said, introducing the next song, to which a member of the audience replied, “We like it anyway!” And so it was: the night Feist could do no wrong.

Raheem DeVaughn @ the Fox Theatre — 2008.03.26

As he bounds through the aisle of the Fabulous Fox Theatre, whipping the venue’s 4200 audience members into a frenzy, it’s clear that Raheem DeVaughn knows what the ladies like. And that’s dancing.
