Now I realize how much time I've wasted over the years using cooking pots for mixing large quantities of anything/everything. And by using the cooking pots, I've had to do things in 'batches' - takes forever and then I must hope that all the 'batches' taste the same (meatballs for example).
This bowl is sturdy but easy to hold and carry, even when full. I've used it for mixing up piles of meatballs, meatloaves, bread dough, pizza dough, and harvesting the garden veggies (rather than lugging a laundry basket out to the yard, piling in the veggies and then having to drag the thing to the house because it is too frail and wimbly to carry it loaded with things like summer squash, zucchini, carrots, tomatoes, melons, eggplant and such).
I've also used it to hold lots and lots of tomatoes, peppers, onions, etc., as I slice and dice for homemade sauce all in one batch. One of my 7 dogs is allergic to prepared dog food so for her, I must cook. She gets rice and oatmeal mixed with baby cereal, boiled chicken and boiled hamburg as her mainstay with veggies and fruit added when serving her. Prior to having this bowl, I was making rice/oatmeal mixture in my largest pan, waiting for it to cool, then transferring to several bowls around the kitchen so I could boil the chicken, clean the pan up, then boil the hamburg, making a complete mess of the kitchen and just about every pot/pan I own to make her meals in advance a few days at a time. Now with this huge bowl, I can cook her rice/oatmeal mixture one day and refrigerate it. The rice/hamburg can be boiled separately and skimmed, then premeasured and frozen. When I need to mix it all together, I just dump it all in the this bowl, let it defrost and then dig in with both hands like I'm making meatloaf and mix it all up at once. Zap! It is done in minutes with a bit of preplanning.
Bowl cleans up like a dream also. Shiny, slick, pretty surface cleans easily with warm soapy water. I rinse with hot and then towel dry. I don't have a dishwasher but I doubt this would fit in one anyway. I have one of those double sinks in the kitchen with the 'idiot faucet' - you gals know the 'idiot faucet'; it is the faucet that is almost as low as the counter so a large bowl/pot, even a large milk glass can't be maneuvered in the sink for cleaning without being a contortionist! So, even with my dratted double sink and idiot faucet, I can easily hold this bowl on its side, turn it as I wash it and then repeat the procedure when rinsing it. Not a problem.
I was going to get the larger one (20 qt if I remember correctly) and am so glad I didn't. It would probably be bigger than me and hard to lift when full. I am only 5'4" - well, maybe now that I'm getting older, I swear I'm getting shorter, so I might be about 5'2" now and this does the job. Any job. Every job. If you can find a place to store it, don't hesitate. Heck, one could even do hand laundry in this or wash a small pet! It doesn't tip or roll. Has a great base and stays where you place it. The 5/8" rim makes it easy to pick up and move it around. The rim is a tiny bit rolled/curled, so my fingers feel secure beneath it. It almost feels as if the rim hugs my fingers to prevent slipping away, but not enough of a 'curl' for food to get stuck beneath it. The base sitting on the counter measures about 8" in diameter: the widest part of the bowl at the top excluding the rim is close to 17" in diameter and it is 6" high.
Man oh man! The right tool for the right job in the kitchen makes life sooo much simpler and the tasks go so much more quickly. I'll never be without this bowl again!
Edit: 2/15/10 Storage idea: I had been storing this large bowl on top of the upright freezer in the cellar but that meant a trip to the cellar each time I wanted to use it. One night, I got lazy and just shoved it into the oven on the bottom rack. VOILA! That is now its permanent home. Fits just right and the oven door closes just perfectly to enclose it. On those few occasions now where I need/want the large oven (vs the toaster oven), I simply place it somewhere else in the kitchen until the oven is cool enough to put it back inside. Having it right at my fingertips all the time now makes me think of tons of additional uses for it, thus making my life in the kitchen easier and getting things done quicker. Still love, love, love this bowl!
Everyone knows there are a few basic items you need in a kitchen--a knife, a colander, a pan, a pan--but there are also items you don't know you need until a solution presents itself. This is such an item. Trying to mix dough, salads, sauces, etc in a bowl that is too small for the task is annoying. But I already had a set of mixing bowls and assumed that the largest one in the set was about the best I could get. I was wrong.
This bowl is big. I know the listing shows the dimensions, but they don't do it justice. This thing has to be seen to be believed. You can mix almost anything in this, of almost any size. That isn't an exaggeration, it really is that versatile. Forget cups and ounces, you can use this with things measured in gallons and pounds. Veggie salad for a dozen people, it's got it; saucing two dozen chicken drummies, no problem; quadruple batch of cookie dough, done! What is more, the stainless steel design makes clean up a snap. I have had this bowl for several years now and continue to use it with regularity. It had acquired a few nicks and dings, but it is still going strong and I anticipate many more years of service from it.
While I do not think this bowl has any flaws, there are two things to be aware of, simply for practicality. Both arise from its size. First, you are almost certainly going to have to wash this by hand; I know of no dishwasher big enough for this to easily fit in. This won't be a huge hassle because even I, who detest doing dishes, find this remarkably easy to clean. Second, this is difficult to store. Given its massive size, you will need either a huge cupboard to put it in or, more likely, have to set it on top of the fridge when not in use. If you are someone who cares about the look of your kitchen, having it just out on your fridge may not be the most attractive way to store it.
Bottom line, this is a phenomenal product and really one that you should get. It will make mixing a variety of items so much easier, and who doesn't want that when it comes to cooking?
They excel in dealing w garden produce (no bending under load). We take them right out to the garden, load them up w produce, then wash/rinse produce inside them at sink, quick rinse of the bowl, drip-dry in right-hand sink & storage atop the frig. By the way, someone was wondering where to store them....if don't have a good side-pantry or under cabinet shelf, they do nicely, facing down (& nested) on top of the refrigerator or freezer.
I use them in so many different ways. These have stood the test of time, no denting or bending, still going strong. Just came back to buy 2 more before gardening/orcharding/canning season starts again. Pricier this time, though (5 yrs ago they were around $16 each, today $28 ea). But worth it if the quality remains the same. Will be back to mention it, if not.
