Helping break in the freshly renovated Peabody Opera House with the stage lights still warm from Aretha Franklin's performance days before, Wilco treated fans to an extended set fitting of the luxurious venue.

Photographer's Notes:

Cameras Used:

  • Nikon D3
  • Nikon D700

Lenses Used:

As I mentioned in the preview post for this set, I shot mostly at ISO 3200 at f/2.8 between 1/160 and 1/200. Lighting was relatively good, though often monochromatic. Thankfully, there was generally enough carefully planned lighting on Jeff Tweedy that the frontman was almost always well lit, the only exceptions being when he stepped away from his mic.

The only real disappoint for this show came in the venue's restriction that limited photography from the sides of the venue, making this a distance shoot. The reason given is that since it's a seated theater, we'd be in the way of audience members at the front of the stage. While I can empathize with stance to a degree, there are many more options that would have allowed for better photography than the allotted position.

Personally, the thing that kills be about restrictions like this is not being able to deliver the images I want to to the fans. I'm hoping that since the Peabody Opera House has just reopened, they'll be working out the kinks.

The Peabody has almost the exact layout of the Fox Theater here, and stagefront photography is almost always accommodated unless the tour has its own restrictions.

Due to the distance from the stage, shooting with the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 was a no-brainer. I did have the chance to pull out the beautiful Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 for photographing the interior of the venue, which is beautiful.

Even with unfortunate venue shooting restrictions, it's really hard to argue with a venue that looks as nice as the Peabody Opera House.
